When the #Secretary_General of the #United_Nations @antonioguterres called for a ceasefire and made his courageous stance known at the start of the war against #Gaza, he set a brave example for the secretaries and directors-generals of specialized international organizations, sending a clear message to each one of them, that they should carry out their responsibilities within the bounds of their respective bodies. Did this happen? It most certainly did not.
Doesn't the #UNESCO claim to champion #education and to uphold #Press_freedoms? Doesn’t the UNESCO pledge to preserve #heritage, monuments, and historical buildings?
During the #Israeli_aggression on #Gaza, hundreds of schools and universities have utterly been demolished. Thousands of school children have been murdered in their kindergartens and schools, and Babies are massacred in the arms of their own mothers.
On this occasion, Her Highness Sheikha #Moza_bint_Nasser's decision to step down from her role as a #UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador is not merely a fleeting condemnation of UNESCO’s failure to save the children of Gaza from an ongoing tragedy that the world is still shamefully unable to solve. Her decision reflects a principled, unwavering stance on her responsibilities towards children's rights and education, causes to which she has devoted her very being.
#Journalists were killed in large numbers, to the extent that even their family members were deliberately targeted and murdered to silence their voices, as exemplified in the tragedy of #Wael_Al_Dahdouh and the
killing of his family and recently his son. This is just one of many heartbreaking stories.
Gaza is a #historical_city full of monuments, historical sites, and buildings, all of which were destroyed.
The list is endless.
The current Director-General of UNESCO, @AAzoulay, has not uttered a single word about this humanitarian catastrophe, as if the matter does not concern her.
We passionately believe that directors of international organizations have no right to declare a moratorium on their role and impede their organizations from fulfilling their duties. These international organizations were established to serve #humanity and to uphold and preserve #human_values. If they fail in that mission, what legitimacy do they hold?
If officials fall short of their own responsibilities, shouldn’t member states have a duty to declare the truth and prevent the organization from stagnating?
(The current UNESCO Director-General @AAzoulay won by one vote over the Arab candidate, with four of these votes belonging to four Arab countries. How strange and ironic!!!)
