It is a prominent, razor-sharp fin of exposed Tuscarora Sandstone (also known as Tuscarora Quartzite), a Lower Silurian-age (≈440 Ma) orthoquartzite.

▶️ That rises ~250 m (820 ft) above the North Fork River in Pendleton County, West Virginia.
The formation consists of two parallel, near-vertical walls separated by a narrow notch, with the higher West Fin reaching 274 m (900 ft) above the valley floor.
The rock is >95% quartz, extremely hard (Mohs 7), and cross-bedded, displaying pale tan to white layers with iron-oxide staining that produces striking orange banding.
Jointing is pervasive, creating the classic “fins” and blocky talus slopes at the base.
The feature is part of the Wills Mountain Anticline in the folded Appalachian Mountain belt.
▪️ Deposition (Early Silurian, ~440 Ma): Clean quartz sand accumulated in a broad, shallow marine shelf along the eastern margin of Laurentia (ancestral North America).
These sands were derived from erosion of the Taconic Highlands to the east and deposited as beach and near-shore bars, forming the thick, resistant Tuscarora Formation.
▪️ Burial & Lithification: Continued sedimentation buried the sands several kilometers deep; pressure and silica cementation transformed them into quartzite.
▪️ Alleghenian Orogeny (Late Paleozoic, ~320–260 Ma): Continent-continent collision between Laurentia and Gondwana folded the quartzite into the Wills Mountain Anticline.
The Tuscarora’s competence caused it to fracture along vertical joints rather than fold plastically.
Uplift & Erosion
▪️ (Mesozoic–Cenozoic): Regional uplift elevated the Appalachians; differential erosion stripped away weaker surrounding shales and limestones (e.g., Devonian Helderberg and Marcellus Formations), leaving the erosion-resistant quartzite fin standing in high relief.
Stream incision by the North Fork River and frost wedging along joints sharpened the crest.
