#Ethiopia: Sheger FM journalists released after more than 20 days in detention
Addis Abeba – #Sheger FM Radio announced that its journalists, editor Tigist Zerihun and reporter Mintamer Tsegaw, were released on 24 September 2025 after spending more than 20 days in detention.
Their release followed a ruling by the Federal Supreme Court’s Second Criminal Bench, which upheld an earlier decision of the Federal High Court, Lideta Division, granting the journalists bail set at 50,000 birr each. The court also dismissed an appeal by the Federal Police Crime Investigation Bureau that claimed the pair could tamper with evidence if freed.
According to Sheger FM, the two journalists were released in the afternoon of 24 September. They had been detained since 29 August, four days after broadcasting a report citing a Ministry of Health circular and featuring healthcare professionals’ demands for improved pay and benefits.

News: #Sheger FM says journalists remain in custody for 17 days despite court-ordered bail
Addis Abeba– Two journalists from Sheger FM Radio, editor Tigist Zerihun and reporter Mintamr Tsegaw, have remained in Federal Police custody for 17 days despite a court order granting their release on bail, the station said.
Following the arrests, police requested a 14-day extension to pursue investigations. The court granted nine days. At the subsequent hearing, police sought further time for forensic analysis, financial transaction reviews, and other inquiries. After hearing arguments from both sides, the Lideta Division of the Federal High Court’s First Bench for extended detention hearings ordered the release of the journalists on bail set at 50,000 birr.
Court documents show that all required procedures were finalized and submitted to the Federal Police Crime Investigation Department on 17 September 2025. Despite this, the Federal Police appealed the High Court’s decision to the Federal Supreme Court, where a hearing is scheduled for 22 September 2025.

#Ethiopia: Fed. Court postpones hearing for detained #Sheger FM journalists, CPJ calls for their release
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged Ethiopian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Sheger FM Radio reporter Mintamir Tsegaw and editor Tigist Zerihun after their court appearance was postponed from Friday to Monday, 8 September 2025.
Colleagues at Sheger FM said the Ethiopian Media #Authority (EMA) issued a letter accusing the station of “incitement to violence and bias” following a report on health professionals. The station later removed the report from its social media pages. CPJ confirmed in a statement released on 5 September 2025 that the content had been deleted.
According to Sheger FM staff, the two journalists are being held at the Federal Police Crime Investigation Bureau in Mexico, Addis Abeba, and no formal charges have been filed. Their hearing at the Lideta Branch of the Federal High Court, initially scheduled for 5 September, was delayed due to the court’s heavy workload.

We promised that the next corridor review would be on the streets. I'm pleased to share that we've finished the Piassa and Arat Kilo routes in three months, right on schedule. Resource saving remains essential, and we need to be fast and innovative to maintain our momentum in the remaining corridors.
Ensuring quality and creating a conducive environment for all our citizens remains our top priority. This project thrives on cooperation, and I'm grateful for the goodwill we've received, reciprocating the effort and goodwill we've put into planning and execution.
We apologize for any inconveniences we may have caused our citizens in the process of this grand initiative that is positively transforming our cities. Rest assured, we are committed to helping Ethiopia and will continue to address any design and quality gaps as we progress.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in these efforts, including our partners in the private sector and those who came out to share their love with us in the streets yesterday evening.
