I walked into #SlossTech last week as a first-time founder. I walked out more convinced than ever that this is the right project, the right time and the right city.
Fourteen hundred founders and investors in Birmingham. The event itself hit harder than any single session — smart people building tech-enabled solutions to real-world problems, and doing it with a combination of confidence and humility that you don't always find in tech spaces. Veterans who've already built companies sitting next to first-timers like me. Everybody learning. Everybody building.
That energy confirmed something I've believed for 30 years leading sports media teams at every level: the industry has a problem worth solving, and now the tools exist to solve it.
More than 60 college football programs outside the Power 4 have almost no consistent professional coverage. The fans are loyal. The demand is real — 80% dissatisfied, 77% willing to pay for better. But the business model to serve them broke a long time ago.
@DiehardSportNet exists to fix the economics. We built DiehardOS — an operations system trained on my 30-plus years of experience in media, sports and technology, combined with industry best practices across every aspect of the business. Sales, marketing, content creation and distribution, community engagement — all systemized and put in the hands of a local publisher. The storyteller stays at the center. The technology works around them. One publisher can now run what used to require a full staff.
That's what I took away from Sloss Tech more than anything. We are building a human-centered company. The technology exists to make the publisher viable. In a room full of people building the future, that felt like the right place to stand.
We're live in four Alabama markets — UAB, Jacksonville State, Troy, South Alabama. We go full launch in July. Birmingham built.
