My electric bill from December to March was £120
I am on the Power NI economy 7 tariff which allows me to charge up my 5KWh battery overnight at 17p kwh (1 unit). For that quarter I exported 125kwh - £21.25
So far this month I have exported 105 kwh to the grid and imported 126kwh If we get a few more good days of bright sunshine I would expect to draw even this month.
Come May I think I can turn off the overnight charging and rely on the longer days to keep the battery topped up and power the house.
I turned off the hot water on the central heating in February the smart immersion heater was keeping the hot water tank hot without the need for the oil.
Extremely happy with the system so far.
#Solarupdate Bit long winded this post so the short version is - Solar good, the three very overcast days I used 75p of grid power and exported 3kw which is 51p back.
Now for the long version..
**Disclaimer I am not a plumber or an electrician***
So along with the solar panels and the battery bank I also got an iBoost smart immersion heater switch. This turns on your immersion heater when you are producing surplus energy, So not only can you export to the grid you can also get a free tank of hot water - on a sunny winters day ( which there are plenty of ) I will not need to use the central heating to heat the water which should make a difference to the amount of oil used.
But there was an issue and took me a few days to figure out what was wrong. My tank was only heating the top 12" to very hot (too hot ) and the rest of the tank was room temperature. Some online research told me there's a thermostat fitted to the immersion heater. Picture below
So I took the cover off and found the thermostat and turned it down to 50 and let the system run for 24 hrs. Nothing changed the hot water was still far too hot and it was still only heating the top 12" of the tank. Some further online research indicated the thermostat could be broken and its a relatively easy thing to replace, so I got one from screwfix and replaced it - let the system run for 24 hrs and this time the water was at the correct temperature but it was still only heating the top 12" of the tank. I starting searching online for some sort of circulation pump that I could fit to the tank to mix the hot and cold water and give me a full tank of hot water, couldn't find anything. So my outside tap was dripping and I went over to Beggs and Partners in Ards to get a new tap, while I was there I asked the guy about circulatory pumps for a hot water tank told him the problem and he said sounds like its the wrong immersion heater fitted, I told him it was an 11" ( I knew this because of the replacement thermostat I had previously purchased ) He told me that was far too small for a copper cylinder and recommended a 27" one which I purchased and fitted .... and it worked
I am now a lot happier with how it all works. I have a full tank of 50°C hot water and I'm still exporting to the grid. The initial heating of the tank up to temperature took a lot longer, and overnight it loses about 10°C but its a lot less energy to heat it back up to 50°C from 40°C than it is from cold.

Yesterday it was overcast all day, however the battery bank did get fully charged and we had plenty of hot water, I've turned the thermostat down on the immersion heater because the water was too hot. This morning during the sunny spells pictured below - the battery is getting charged, we are exporting .5kw and the smart immersion is on hence the high 1.645kw usage. Since install we have used 10p per day of mains electric - and I think this is a standing charge because according to my monitoring system we haven't used any grid power. Its not all roses I'm sure this will change during the low light winter months but all good so far ( apart from the gaping hole in my bank account 🫤)
