Canada is officially on its way to becoming a true spacefaring nation! 🚀 The Government of Canada is investing $182.6M in sovereign space launch capabilities, and for the first time in our nation’s history has sent a clear signal that assured access to space is of vital importance to Canada's security, sovereignty and economy. Our team at NordSpace congratulates the Government of Canada (@Canada) and the Department of National Defence (@NationalDefence) for their leadership and dedication to a more secure, resilient, and prosperous Canada.
NordSpace has been working around the clock for years to self-fund and develop not just Canada’s first orbital launch vehicles and engines for responsive and reusable medium-lift capabilities, but also the infrastructure necessary to support a vertically integrated operation that is commercially viable, highly efficient, and truly sovereign. From our own spaceport, the Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in Newfoundland, to our own space systems division building dual-use small satellites, NordSpace is a 100% Canadian-owned company pushing every frontier.
NordSpace believes the following recommendations are vital:
1️⃣ Focus on Two Vehicles: There is historical precedent for small launch vehicles developed for under $100M USD. Competition is critical, and Canada must down select using the US and EU as examples to invest in two front runners, not just one, to ensure there are enough resources for both to have a reasonable chance of achieving orbit; complemented by their own independent capital formation efforts.
2️⃣ Performance Based Milestones: Building orbital rockets is challenging. Ensuring the two competitors are competing for a larger allocation of funds and feel the pressure to deliver on Canada’s ambitious timelines can be driven by unlocking funding milestones through limited but critical capability demonstrations. Moving at the speed of irrelevance is no longer an option for Canada.
3️⃣ Capability Over Technology: The world knows how to build efficient and reliable rockets, for nearly 75 years. It’s critical that Canada focuses on first principles derived architectures with significant historical precedent and demonstrated commercial viability to ensure the focus of sovereign space launch for Canada is primarily developing a functional launch capability, and secondarily developing novel launch technology.
4️⃣ Ensure Sovereignty: Canada suffers from a perennial and major challenge of foreign investment, control, and eventual acquisition of majority or full interest in Canadian owned and often publicly supported companies. Ensuring that Canadian launch companies are truly Canadian is a matter of national security and sovereignty.
5️⃣ Provincial Economic Development: Building a defence industrial base is not solely federal jurisdiction. Immediate provincial coordination and investment are vital to accelerate full-scale manufacturing and testing facilities. These investments will not only unlock significant long-term job creation but also deliver an outsized economic multiplier via local supply chain and partnerships.

Responsive space launch from Canadian soil has taken a massive leap forward today with a landmark partnership between Kongsberg Geospatial and NordSpace. Kongsberg Geospatial, the Canadian subsidiary of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NordSpace Corp. to collaborate on advancing Canada’s responsive sovereign space launch and range safety capabilities.
Under the MoU, Kongsberg Geospatial will support the development of the digital Mission Control centre at NordSpace’s Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in Newfoundland, leveraging its TerraLens SDK and airspace visualization platforms to support responsive space launches.
The system will ingest data from multiple sensors to deliver real-time three-dimensional (3D) visualization of launch operations, range safety, decision support, and vehicle tracking. This will help streamline launch operations and enable deployment of critical space missions to orbit in under 48 hours.
“Kongsberg Geospatial has been delivering made-in-Canada technology for more than 30 years to keep Canadians safe in the air and at sea,” said Jordan Freed, President and Managing Director of Kongsberg Geospatial. “Working with NordSpace allows us to extend that expertise into space, supporting safe and sustainable launch operations from Canadian soil.”
Building on Kongsberg’s experience supporting range safety and mission-critical visualization for the Andøya Space and Defence project in Norway, and continuing its legacy as a digital air traffic service technology leader that is evolving into the future with the NAV Canada DAATS program, Kongsberg Geospatial brings proven expertise in managing complex air and space operations to this new collaboration.
The two companies will combine their expertise to support Canada’s growing space sector. Kongsberg Geospatial will provide its software engineering and situational awareness technologies, while NordSpace brings launch vehicle development and spaceport infrastructure. Together, they will work with federal and provincial governments on regulatory approvals, funding initiatives, and stakeholder engagement.
“With NordSpace’s bold mission to develop responsive space missions capabilities in Canada, it is incredibly exciting to work with a world-class partner like Kongsberg Geospatial who brings decades of experience developing and operating mission critical geospatial awareness tools proven to provide the real-time insights we will need to launch on a dime,” said Rahul Goel, CEO and Founder of NordSpace. “Kongsberg’s collaboration on the development of our Atlantic Spaceport Complex, leveraging their experience developing the Andøya Space Center in particular, will help ensure resilience, responsiveness and reliability of our launch operations to serve defence and commercial interests for the Canadian government, and our Allies across NATO.”
This collaboration will help strengthen Canada’s defence and aerospace innovation ecosystem and create new opportunities for both commercial and dual-use applications, including orbital and suborbital launches, hypersonic vehicle testing, and uncrewed aerial systems.
