Some #human #pathogens are #older than many researchers expected. For example, the bacterial pathogen of the #Treponema #pallidum (#Spirochaetaceae) subspecies, which can cause #syphilis, #yaws, and #bejel, is deeply rooted in the #history of the indigenous populations of the #Americas. According to the authors D. Bozzi et al. (2026), #geneticevidence from a sample of #humanremains from Middle #Holocene sediments of the #Tequendama I rock shelter in #SabanadeBogotá, #Colombia, shows significant similarities with modern known T. pallidum #lineages. Although there were no morphological #skeletal indications for #treponematosis, it is still proof of the existence of treponematosis in the Americas thousands of years before European #colonization began. This makes the evolutionary diversification of Treponema pallidum significantly older than assumed before and brings it into another #cultural human #context. A newly sequenced genome of the bacterium that causes syphilis, Treponema pallidum, highlights the deep antiquity of treponemal diseases in the Americas. The findings in Science, based on a 5500-year-old specimen from Colombia, suggest syphilis’s emergence was not dependent on the agricultural intensification and population crowding often linked to the spread of infectious disease.
