#WildflowerHour #SeedHeads of Medicago sativa: According to #Stace4 there are circles/pod thus (L, M, R): Sickle Medick <½; Sand Lucerne ½-1½; Lucerne 2-3(4). I find this very variable, plant profile (low, bushy, upright) & flower colour (if still there) offer a helping hand.
💚 Love amongst the Artemisas 💚?
Here's tall Mugwort with short Wormwood today on Biggleswade Common, #Bedfordshire. (Artemisia vulgaris & absinthum) Although #Stace4 list hybrids of A. vulgaris none is with A. absinthum 😉

Return to Hybrid Comfrey (S. x perringianum) today, now in flower: As #Stace4 says "off-white flowers with corolla-tips pale pink turning to pale violet" ✅ & "a deeply divided calyx" ✅ next to the naughty White Comfrey (lower right pic) 😉
@pollymm @wildflower_hour @SurreyWT Great aren't they! That looks like a female flower head which may be unusual in the south - more common in north & central England (says #Stace4!).
#WildFlowerHour Lycopsis arvensis, Bugloss, on the Red Crag cliffs at Bawdsey Cliff, Suffolk. #Stace4 says "hispid" and it is indeed painfully so.
#WildFlowerHour Maybe an escape from Pulhamite ‘rock’ gardens of Bawdsey Manor. Few years back carpeting the Red Crag cliffs down to shore but now succumbing to coastal erosion! Carpobrotus glaucescens, Angular Sea-fig, #Stace4: "CI, E Suffolk, Wigtowns; E Australia."🌊💮
First saw @wildflower_hour #DeadnettleFamily challenge when in @CUBotanicGarden. In Lamiaceae beds found pink/white kaleidoscope of Clary (Salvia sclarea), peered to see where colours from! #Stace4 Pink & white bracts ≥ lilac flowers, green calyx, infrequent garden relic.🤔
@NatureLark Nice photos. Ash has strange sex life: #Stace4: flowers "uni- or bi- sexual, different sorts on same or differnet trees"! For herbacious plants there's loads of books with flower illustrations but for trees even the tree books often have only tiny pictures. We look for leaves!
@Sally_Petitt @CUBotanicGarden Toothworts available in white or purple today, the latter as it says in #Stace4 'on Salix, Populus and other associates such as Gunnera' ✅
Today's #Stace4 plant is another very distinctive one. In full flower it looks like it has gone over - no pretty petals, all brown (or golden!) and spiky. What plant family and what is its name? 1/2
Another #Stace4. This time a perennial native to the British Isles. Delicate yellow to orange petals in the short-lived flowers, white latex oozes when they are picked. What is its name? 1/2
Today’s #Stace4 is another neophyte plant naturalized in the British Isles and a memory of an old industry. Scattered in a few places in southern England & Wales, and Lincolnshire. Photographs taken in Botanic Garden of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. But what is it? 1/2
Sea campion (Silene uniflora aka S. maritima), perennial #Stace4 around the coast of the British Isles, and along western Atlantic and Baltic coast. This one photographed in Botanic Garden of the University of Latvia. 2/2
Really interesting thread from @crawley_mick about using the key in #Stace4 to identify a #plant, with lots of commentary on what to look out for and how to make decisions. Well worth a read.
One of the most daunting things about taking the next step in your plant identification skills improvement is the dreaded “Keys to Families of Angiosperms” in Stace 4, pp. 62-84 (yes, the key really is 22 pages long).
Today's #Stace4 is the only species in its genus. Smells unpleasant when crushed. Dangling green bracteoles beneath the groups of little white flowers. No bracts. So, what is the name of the plant, and how do you tell a bract from a bracteole?? 1/2
Bear’s-breeches Acanthus mollis. Originally in Mediterranean region. Classical Greek Corinthian pillar decoration inspired by the leaf shape. Neophyte, according to #Stace4 is plant arrived in British Isles after 1500. Others use 1492 as date. 2/2
