Antonov Airlines lives. 🇺🇦
Antonov officially maintains its goal of returning the An-225 Mriya to flight, although not by rebuilding it exactly as it was, but by completing the second fuselage, which has been left unfinished since the Soviet era, and reusing all the salvageable parts from the aircraft destroyed in Hostomel in 2022.
From a technical standpoint, I think the most interesting aspect is that a new Mriya would hardly be an exact replica. It would have to incorporate modern avionics, new electronic systems, updated certifications, and probably replace numerous obsolete Soviet components with Western equivalents.
In practice, it would be a hybrid: it would retain the silhouette and performance of the An-225, but internally it would be a much more modern aircraft.
I find it to be one of the most fascinating aeronautical projects of the next decade.
If it finally takes to the skies again, it will be both a technical achievement and a symbol of the recovery of the Ukrainian aerospace industry.
