BUDGET: The GOP is pushing the narrative that the Democrats are fiscally irresponsible and the state is $1.2B in debt because of overspending. That is false. While I take issue on a lot of our tax and spending priorities/policies, TABOR keeps a straitjacket on any "overspending" and our balanced budget amendment keeps us out of debt. So these attacks are dishonest. We are facing a $1.2B shortfall in the next FYs as TABOR only allows the budget to grow by a population and inflation formula. Inflation skyrocketed for several years but fell a lot last year. When we were projected to have a 6-7% inflation rate and instead it is 3-4%... that 2-4% differential on a $40B budget means we have a $800M to $1.6B shortfall of what we budgeted (Currently pegged at $1.2B) .So we will have to cut that much from the next and following year budgets from what everyone had anticipated we would have available, including the GOP...
