#Streambanks that lack veg. cover subject to intense winter freeze/thaw cycles. #NeedleIce results, dislodging #soil particles from bank as ice expands outward. Upon melt, loose particles easily washed downstream. Data suggest f/t = big #sediment & P source in #watersheds!

@NEIowaAgEng @adamkjanke To stabilize tall #streambanks: if channel widening, reduce bank slope (3/4:1), allow vegetation to establish (bank and above bank), stabilize bank toe. If deepening, grade control necessary.
