Any Sullivan building will do. Inside and out. #SullivanSunday

What’s your favorite building in Chicago?
In 1901 Louis Sullivan created a design for Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church & Rectory, influenced by small wooden churches in Siberia. He presented it at the Chicago Architectural Club w/his own watercolor showing the building painted in a mix of bold colors. #SullivanSunday

Today’s Christmas but it’s also #SullivanSunday - here is Louis Sullivan’s Van Allen Building (1913) in Clinton, Iowa then & now. The Dept. Store’s rich projecting terra cotta ornamentation against a plain horizontal brick surface shares similarities w/Sullivan’s jewel box banks.

1907 postcard of the completed building that Louis Sullivan had designed for the Gage Brothers, a millinery firm. It still stands at 18 South Michigan Ave. #SullivanSunday

At the James Charnley House (1892) Louis Sullivan designed a hot-water radiator system that is still in use 130 yrs later. The radiators are suspended below the floors or inside the walls, concealed behind ornamental grates. #SullivanSunday

Local artist Thomas Melvin created this mural on the side of 205 N. Peoria St. “to let people see the city through Louis Sullivan’s eyes.” The design also incorporates greenery, paying tribute to one of the architect’s biggest loves - nature. #SullivanSunday

Finally visited @Wrightwood659 to see the “Romanticism to Ruin” exhibit. I hope to write a review tomorrow but this is a must-see for anyone who loves architecture. Now that it’s been extended thru December, no excuses go see it ASAP. #SullivanSunday

Adler & Sullivan’s Getty Tomb is an official Chicago landmark. Built in 1890, the limestone cube is made of smooth blocks & rectangular octagons. A plaster cast of the ornate bronze doorway won Sullivan an award at the 1900 Paris Exhibition. #SullivanSunday

I found myself in Lincoln Square today and had to pay my respects to Louis Sullivan’s last building, the Krause Music Store (1922). Anyone want to buy it for me? #SullivanSunday

“Every building you see is the image of the man you do not see, the man is the reality, the building is his offspring.” - Louis Sullivan, 1912

“Mrs. James Waller is so used to people trying to get into house, she thinks nothing of it anymore. Some come by the busload. Others merely stand outside & stare. Mrs. Waller doesn’t mind. She’s proud to live in an architectural gem.” (@chicagotribune Feb 21 1965) #SullivanSunday
