NIGERIAโS UNSEEN CLASS OF 2026: THREE GRADUATES, ONE THREAD OF UNBREAKABLE RESILIENCE๐ณ๐ฌ
While debt clocks ticked past โฆ159 trillion and 2027 fever gripped the headlines, three quiet rebels rewrote the script: Jubril Agbalaya Ayomide hauled cement sacks to First Class glory at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology; Offiong Bassey Edet turned classroom floors into a throne at the University of Calabar; and barefoot Almajiri Ahmad Isa, sponsored by a stranger from Edo, rose at Federal University Dutse. Hunger, tiles, and tribal odds โ all defeated. Nigeriaโs real Class of 2026.

CANCER'S SHADOW: How Faith Becomes Medicine in Nigeriaโs Failing Healthcare System
In the sweltering heat of Port Harcourt, a mother diagnosed with cancer faced an unbearable burden. Raising two young children with no money for sustained treatment, she stood at the edge of despair. Yet every night, she slept peacefully. When asked how she endured such uncertainty, she smiled gently and said, โI stopped trusting in doctors alone, and started trusting in the Doctor who made them.โ
Her story is far from unique. Across Nigeria, countless cancer patients and their families are discovering similar resilience as the public healthcare system struggles under chronic strain. In the proposed 2026 federal budget, the health sector received โฆ2.48 trillion, representing just 4.2 percent of the total N58.47 trillion national budget, well below the 15 percent target of the 2001 Abuja Declaration. In 2025, the situation was even more stark, with only โฆ36 million released out of โฆ218 billion appropriated for capital projects in the Federal Ministry of Health. With more than 70 percent of health spending still paid directly out of pocket, families are frequently driven into poverty, and many cancer patients arrive at hospitals with advanced-stage disease.
In the gaps left by underfunding, specialist shortages, and frequent strikes, faith-based organizations have become essential pillars of care. The Christian Health Association of Nigeria (CHAN) coordinates nearly 690 mission hospitals and clinics nationwide, delivering medical services in remote and underserved communities where government facilities are often absent. These centers frequently combine clinical treatment with spiritual counseling, addressing both body and soul.
A notable example is the Faith Alive Foundation in Jos, which recorded 37,164 patient visits in 2023, including 12,558 HIV/AIDS-related consultations, 1,556 successful deliveries, and effective programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the virus.
Individual testimonies add profound depth. Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, founder of Word of Life Bible Church, recently revealed his private battle with cancer. Confronted with a $120,000 medical bill in the United States and warnings that the disease had spread, he continued public ministry while anchoring deeply in prayer. He emerged victorious, crediting divine sustenance. Likewise, breast cancer survivor Mariam Oluwaseun Salami, diagnosed in 2022, found strength through community prayers and steadfast faith alongside her medical journey.
At the center of these experiences stands Proverbs 3:5-6: โTrust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.โ
Faith does not substitute for the urgent need for improved healthcare investment. Yet in a nation where hospitals frequently fall short, it offers something equally powerful, an inner peace, communal support, and transcendent hope that sustains millions of cancer patients when medical systems reach their limits.

CANCER'S SHADOW: HOW FAITH BECOMES MEDICINE IN NIGERIAโS FAILING HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
In the humid nights of Port Harcourt, a cancer-stricken mother with two young children and dwindling resources discovered an unshakeable peace. Forsaking sole reliance on broken hospitals, she placed her trust in the Doctor who made them. Her story reveals how, amid Nigeriaโs collapsing healthcare system, deep faith becomes the truest medicine.
