A serviceman with the callsign Omar shows a video of his recent work on his phone. It’s drone footage: dense fog all around, droplets on the camera, the drone lifts off from a road, flies toward the barely visible silhouette of an enemy tank, and slams straight into its track. «See? Even the fog isn’t an obstacle for us: we work, we strike. We’ve learned to use the "wait-and-hit" tactic. The Russians aren’t the only ones who can do that» – Omar grins. Today he is the commander of a strike-drone platoon, fighting with fiber-optic FPVs in an anti-tank guided missile company. At the beginning of the war, he and his comrades stopped tank columns using Stuhna, Korsar and Fagot missile systems. But when the nature of the war changed and hitting tanks with direct-fire missiles became too risky, Omar began developing his own drone platoon working on "optics". So the platoon transitioned from wire-guided missiles to "wired" drones that give the operator a clear image, are resistant to EW, and strike enemy targets from a much greater distance. The fighters built their own workshop, where they 3D-print spools and wind fiber-optic cable on them. «We have a fully closed cycle. The guys built an excellent machine that lets us assemble the spools ourselves. This cuts the drone’s cost in half. And for every mission we use a spool of exactly the length we need. A lot depends on the quality of the winding. If something is done incorrectly, the cable snaps easily. Each of our drones is a custom product. That’s why our rate of drones reaching the target is close to one hundred percent. Almost no breaks. Unlike the Russians, we can’t afford to waste dozens of drones. Every one of our flights has to deliver a result» – the commander explains. At the training ground, Omar trains fighters to operate fiber-optic drones. Unlike regular FPVs, these drones are bulky – carrying a large spool and an explosive charge – not very maneuverable, and require a special approach. «We learn every day. The next step is scaling. It’s work not only with drones, but also with people. I constantly watch who’s better at flying, who’s better as a navigator, who’s better at assembling drones or delivering them to positions. Every one of our guys is worth their weight in gold. And I always tell them: grow as individuals, stay curious, become leaders. That’s how we’ll expand and move forward» – Omar says.
