Earlier this month, the Agroberichten platform of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature published an article about how nets from the flower and fishing industries are being used as protection against Russian drone attacks in Ukraine. This is a strong example of recycling and sustainability in the Dutch primary sector. Together with other foundations both in the Netherlands and abroad, De Leeuw Kyiv collects, transports, and distributes these nets. We’ve already collected large quantities of nets from dozens of flower bulb growers across various regions and much more is coming after this summer’s harvest. These nets come in large rolls, making them ideal for transport. In practice, they’ve proven strong enough to stop kamikaze drones. At some locations, these nets catch dozens of drones per day(!). So far, we’ve delivered hundreds of kilometers of bulb nets and several thousand tons of fishing nets to Ukraine. Many of these are already installed at the front. Drones now account for around 70% of all casualties on the front lines in Ukraine.
