Over the past few years, around 60 volunteers have been involved in #SwitchingTheLens project, searching the baptism and burial registers of London parishes for mentions of Londoners of African, Asian, Caribbean and indigenous heritage.

This weekend we looked at the life and family of Indian traveller, surgeon and entrepreneur Sake Dean Mahomed using records from our #SwitchingTheLens project.

Sake Dean Mahomed left India in 1783 and travelled to Ireland where he married Jane Daly. He later set up his own business, the Hindostanee Coffee House in Marylebone in 1810, which served Indian cuisine. As seen here in a register of Licensed Victuallers ...
