Janet is truly selfless and believes in the greater good because she could have been petty or used Olivia’s desperateness to her advantage, but instead she set their arguments aside to save a child even though the major is indirectly responsable for the death of her own #tmot37

I hate how terribly Olivia treats Janet, who built a name for her family from nothing. Olivia, in fact, blamed her for Dodie’s almost death. She only acknowledges her when her own child is dying, when Janet’s son died at the hands of Carteret’s movement. #tmot37

#TMOT37 i feel the fact Janet opted to save Dodie’s life shows the positivity of African American literature. Chesnutt is saying that people inherently are good. Janet did not act upon revenge, because she feels sympathy. A stark contrast to other works of American literature

#tmot37 The action that Janet took was unfathomable and bonded the families together.I think what she did was for the best and the cliffhanger allows us to be able to make these interpretations. Her character was developed so carefully and provides a lasting message. #GoJanet

It’s amazing that towards the end of the book the guy who had basically no power throughout the book, now has so much power in choosing whether to save Carteret’s child. What differs Carteret from Miller, however, is how Miller uses his power. #tmot37

The fact that the narrative ends before the reader finds out if Dodie lives or not, is supposed to establish he question of will the the legacy of bitterness and hatred associated with race survive, or will it be changed in a fundamental and unconventional way. #tmot37

The fact that Major Carteret actually understands the logic behind Dr. Miller’s decision not to help him, shows some evolution with his character, therefore establishing the possibility that there is yet hope for Major Carteret’s character, despite his prejudice & flaws #tmot37

#tmot37 ? chesnutt uses the concept of an innocent victim + how once the violence/problem reaches children, things easily turn out for the worst. he urges his readers to thk abt the children + put aside differences + take care of the most vulnerable members of town (children)
