It's in the aftermath that most TV shows lose the bulk of their audience. After the big breakup, after the wedding, after the funeral...
...the show is never the same.
And that's about the time that the writers think that completely upending the entire premise of the show is a good idea.

They wreck everything they touch, everyone keeps telling them to get out, they have completely shifting and situational morals, and they just won't go away.

"Hot.
Captures the attention of the world.
Season 2: Raises all possible stakes and builds tension.
Season 3: Resolves threads from Season 1, and purposely or not, concludes the arcs of supporting characters.
Season 4: Totally rewrites itself to include characters that should've been gone by now, and sidelines the main character.
Season 5: Rehashes plots from Season 1, except worse.
Season 6: Is completely overstuffed with too many ancillary characters and has forgotten whose name is on the show.
Season 7: Crash
Folds under the weight of its now unwieldy cast.
Season 8: Burn
Completely destroys its own premise and the audience no longer recognizes the show they're watching.

--The Female Replacement of the Hero, who's touted to be 'better than him in every way'
(can also be The Girl That's the Key to Everything)
--The Mentor (who is always 98% ineffective)

--The Science Person (who happens to be good at every kind of science)
--The Mirror Villain (absolute reverse reflection of the hero)
--The Secondary Characters (introduced in the later seasons making the cast way too big)

But I will say this: it's yet another show where, the premise is really interesting, but I can't find anyone to root for. They're all awful people.
