#TakeBackCheapside
Taking a break from my Twitter hiatus to share these reflections from Russell Allen and myself in this weekend's edition of the @heraldleader.
#TakeBackCheapside 5 years later
A cool twofer in @heraldleader2 this Sunday. First up, @DeBraunThomas looks back on the five years since the Confederate statues were moved out of what's now called Tandy Park.

This is due to the hard work of the #takebackcheapside team and the advocacy of an entire community. Can't wait to visit Tandy Park and pay my respects.
Some good news in the midst of the 2020 hellscape: The city is renaming Cheapside Park for Henry Tandy, a successful Black businessman and Mason who helped built the old courthouse next door. Congrats to Take Back Cheapside and all the other activists who made this happen.
I was there to support the vision that @DeBraunThomas and the rest of the #TakeBackCheapside movement created. Just proud to add my voice to their movement.
THREAD: We appreciate people like @joshhicksky using their platforms to support grassroots movements led by BIPOC, but there's more of our story than this @nowthisnews video.
Statues of #JohnCBreckinridge (1885) and #JohnHuntMorgan (1911) stood @ Cheapside for over 130 years

.@nowthisnews We're proud of the work and fight hard not to be erased. The statues were removed on October 17th, 2018 and this clip only scratches the surface on the story and the work that continues.

#BlackLivesMatter

#TakeBackCheapside had a 3 point plan:
1. Remove the statues
2. Return the historical marker
3. Open up a dialogue to make Cheapside inclusive for all people
This movement led to the removal & relocation of the monuments to the Lexington Cemetery where both men are buried.

In 2015, following the murder of 9 in South Carolina, someone spray painted #BlackLivesMatter on the Morgan statue and less than a month later, the historical marker was vandalized and removed from Cheapside. This led to the creation of #TakeBackCheapside

Preserving history?
There was no historical marker for the Cheapside slave aution until 2003.
#TakeBackCheapside worked for years to get statues of Confederates off the site. Here's co-founder DeBraun Thomas after the council voted 15-0 to move the statues from downtown. 16/

One of the most powerful parts of this video, for me, is the Cheapsode Auction Block and the bill of sale. The message is powerful.

Just a reminder... A year ago today our city came together and, well I'm sure you know the rest. As a reminder, yes, I and we are still here.

The first #TakeBackCheapside storytelling walk is TONIGHT! This is a great opportunity to learn about #Lexington's history and community. #WeAreKY
I am very proud that the city of Louisville listened to the voices of the people and will relocate the statues of John B. Castleman and George D. Prentice. Thanks to those who are always working towards healing and reconciliation. #AllPowerToThePeople #TakeBackCheapside
The #ReimaginingCheapside project, a partnership between the city, #TakeBackCheapside, @BGCF, and others, is holding four public storytelling walks this weekend, allowing residents to take a deeper dive into Lexington's past, while thinking forward. https://t.co/RwD7dS7H3P
Public storytelling walks are coming up August 10, 11 and 12, and they've been designed specifically for us Lexingtonians trying to (Re)Imagine Cheapside. https://t.co/O2vhCpkaoK #TakeBackCheapside
That's one chapter completely closed. Statues are in the cemetery and the historical was returned in March. Now we must focus on working to make that space and the rest of our city an inclusive place for all people.
