Companies incorporating AI into their products have a major advantage at this point in time: novelty.
We’re still in the “very, very, very early innings” of where AI could take us, and the excitement that’s creating is a good thing, @andrewchen, general partner at a16z, shared at #NYTechWeek.
Just some of that evidence: The growth rate companies are seeing is unusually fast.
AI-focused companies are reaching their first million users and first $1 million in revenue in just weeks, he said. “You have incredible top-of-funnel immediately.”
“We’re all surfing the AI wave right now,” Chen said. And what will get users to stick around, he said, will be some of the same principles that have always driven “stickiness.”
Companies in the space will have to prove they have value when incorporated in workflows, and within industries. AI tools will likely become adopted when users know their friends and coworkers are using them, similar to what happened with an example like Zoom, he said.
Chen spoke with @igoldstein5 of @FenwickWest for a panel called “State of AI: What’s Next? The Future of AI” at #NYTechWeek.
When asked about government regulation in the AI space, Chen said individuals within the tech industry, like those present at #NYTechWeek, should rally around the idea of open source.
“We have to actually fight for it and actually build it,” he said of an open-source model.
The industry is so early on its S-curve, and many regulators don’t understand it yet, but they are eager to make rules already, he said.
“For many of the founders in this room, it is really tough and really difficult to comply with every little thing. It’s going to slow all of this down,” he said of innovation in AI. “Let’s keep the innovation engine for America and the broader global economy alive, and let’s do that by having a voice and telling our story of what an amazing thing AI and Web3 and many of these other technologies can bring the world.”
