In 1983, 11-year-old Sabrina Buie was found raped and murdered in North Carolina. Two intellectually disabled teenage brothers, Henry McCollum and Leon Brown, aged 19 and 15 respectively, were arrested for the crime. After enduring hours of interrogation without legal representation, the brothers allegedly succumbed to pressure and signed pre-drafted confessions. Despite their cognitive difficulties and inability to fully comprehend what they were signing, both were sentenced to death. After over three decades behind bars, fresh DNA evidence surfaced in 2014. A cigarette butt discovered at the crime scene was subjected to DNA testing. The examination uncovered that the DNA found on the cigarette butt did not belong to the brothers but rather matched Roscoe Artis, a convicted murderer already incarcerated in a North Carolina prison. This evidence cleared McCollum and Brown, resulting in their release. After their exoneration, the brothers were awarded a historic $75 million settlement. This payout stands as the largest combined settlement in a wrongful conviction case in US history. Each brother received $31 million in damages, equivalent to $1 million for every year spent in prison, along with an additional $13 million in punitive damages.
