ERCOT #TexasGrid Tuesday Morning Update: The Crisis is Over - #NaturalGas, #Wind, #Coal the big winners. As the day dawns over #Texas on January 27 at 6:06 a.m. CT, state's electric grid managed by @ERCOT_ISO has, as they say, weathered the storm. That would be Winter Storm Fern, which, while admittedly not the same level of event as 2021's #Uri, was severe enough to give the grid its sternest stress test in half a decade. And the grid did just fine. The natural gas system maintained its integrity from production through the power plant, providing more than half - and up to as much as 70% at times - of overall generation throughout the event. The legislative reforms enacted during the 2021, 2023, and 2025 sessions proved effective and durable. All involved can now take a bow. For those who still believe that winterization of gas assets that are critical to grid integrity is a waste of time and money in Texas, I'm sorry, you are wrong, and about 25 million safe and warm Texans agree with me. The Wind industry can also take a bow. I'll never be a fan due to all the profligate land waste, massive retirement issues, and false propaganda surrounding the industry, but Texas's wind fleet did provide a sizable amount of input throughout most of the storm. As I type this, it's putting in a very strong 25%, higher than it's been since the advent of the storm. Cool. The state's beleaguered Coal fleet also deserves plaudits for remaining up and running throughout. It's overall capacity in Texas has been cut by half since 2011, so it will never be the biggest contributor, but you can by-God rely on coal to be there when you need it most. That cannot be said for solar and batteries, which have been essentially non-factors about 90% of the time during this storm. Power storage is kicking in about 4% right now, but that's mainly a case a better late than never for a segment that sat at or below zero throughout most of the storm. Here's where the time has come to offer some praise for Texas officials who bore the brunt of harsh criticism and blame for the deadly grid failure during Uri. And, TBH, they deserved that criticism for basically being asleep at the wheel for a decade before Uri hit. But, to their credit, they learned from their mistakes, unlike their peers in California, New York and the New England states. Led by @DanPatrick and @GregAbbott_TX , the state government moved fast after Uri to reconstitute the boards at #ERCOT and the @PUCTX and to enact major reforms to how the system functions. The members of the @txrrc also deserve credit for their quick action in this regard. No one is saying the Texas grid is perfect and doesn't still have problems - you'd be a fool to say that. But it is a damn sight more robust and reliable today than it was five years ago, when 300 of my fellow Texans were lost. With temperatures rising above freezing across most all of the state today, Texans can finally take a deep breath and do a little celebrating, at least until the next major polar vortex arrives. #GodBlessTexas

Natural gas alone is chugging along at an impressive 68%. The gas system didn't freeze up overnight, as so many renewables proponents had cravenly rooted for. The reforms enacted by the Texas legislature #txlege over the last three sessions are clearly working as intended. Time for everyone to thank Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick @LtGovTX for his focused leadership in this area. As you can see in the lefthand chart below, there were few additional outages recorded on the system overnight despite the sub-freezing temperatures and snow and ice which covered most of the state. Obviously, #solar's contributing nothing because the sun isn't up. The vaunted stationary #powerstorage is inputting a paltry 1.5%, and #Wind is below 10% because the wind hasn't picked up in West Texas yet. Due to sunny conditions in much of the state, we can expect wind and solar to both do better after sunrise and give some of the workhorse natural gas plants a bit of a rest for several hours. We still have one more day and another very cold night to go before Texans finally can enjoy above-freezing temperatures, so celebrations remain premature. But no one, not even the most shameless wind and solar boosters, can deny that the reforms enacted since 2021's Winter Storm Uri haven't worked. A new day has dawned on the Texas grid, and @ERCOT_ISO is no longer saddled with managing the problem child of the national system. #GodBlessTexas

ERCOT #TexasGrid Sunday Evening Update: Renewable outages spike as #naturalgas system keeps Texans safe and warm Because I know #wind and #solar advocates and their media cheerleaders will misreport this as a matter of course, I will focus on the orange line on the "Generation Outages" chart on the left below. That line shows the rapid spike in wind and solar outages that took place as the winter storm blew into Texas on January 23/24. The light blue line above it shows dispatchable outages, which have remained static and actually fallen slightly during the course of the storm. The contrast is stark and highly predictable: The one predictable aspect of wind and solar is that they will fail you when they are needed the most, i.e., during major weather events. As I've pointed out in my two previous updates on this storm, Wind has actually done fairly well despite the outages, providing between 10%-15% of total generation online throughout the storm. But solar has failed miserably, providing almost no generation on Saturday and pitching in ~10% or so for several hours once the cloud cover began to clear on Sunday. Power storage, the darling of the legacy media outlets, has been a non-factor throughout. As you can see from the right-hand chart, gas remains the workhorse keeping Texans safe and warm, providing a whopping 65% of total generation on the grid as of 6:00 p.m. CT Sunday. Gas, #coal, and #nuclear combined account for a total of 86.4%. Plus, at the same time, @ERCOT_ISO grid managers enjoyed a capacity margin of ~14,000 MW, most of which is dispatchable natural gas. Next time you see them, thank your local roughneck, roustabout, miner, plant operator, and lineman for keep you and your family safe during this major winter storm. That line shows the rapid spike in wind and solar outages that took place as the winter storm blew into Texas on January 23/24. The light blue line above it shows dispatchable outages, which have remained static and actually fallen slightly during the course of the storm.
