Steinbeck’s imagination was fueled by the natural beauty and interconnectedness of marine life in the tide pools. What emerges in his ‘The Log from the Sea of Cortez’ is a contemplation on the nature of knowledge and the knowledge of nature. #WetTribe #TidePoolTuesday

“It is advisable to look from the tide pool to the stars and then back to the tide pool again.” -John Steinbeck, The Log from the Sea of Cortez. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #CitizenScience #TidepoolTuesday

If you smell something lemony at the Yaquina Head tidepools, the likely culprit is the sea lemon!
Bigger than many of the other nudibranchs found in the Cobble Beach tidepools, the sea lemon is said to have a fruity scent that may deter predators. #TidepoolTuesday

Bringing back #TidepoolTuesday on Pratidin Prani!
Special one because getting a photo of this animal (and it IS an animal!) is not easy. It’s common on Mumbai shores, but shies at the slightest disturbance in the water.
Landlocked friends, can you guess what it is? #IndiAves

Happy belated #RepublicDay2023 in whose spirit I'm trying an ambitious (for me) twitter game: 365 days of Indian nature tweets to celebrate the jiva-jantu of our jungle republic.
Goal: every day until Jan 26 '24, tweet about one Indian species, pref. with a self-taken photo.

It only takes Hermit Crabs a pinch of time to move from one home to the next. As they grow, they need to find a more spacious shell to move into. Their abdomens are thin, soft, and twisted to fit the spiral cavity of the shells they prefer to inhabit.

Velella velella! Also called By-the-wind Sailor, their body has a "sail" attached to it, which allows wind to propel them across the surface of the sea. In spring, they blow ashore, which is when you are likely to see them at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.

You won't see Nemo emerging from the Giant Green Anemone. An adult will rarely move from the spot where it attaches early in life. It paralyzes its prey using stinging cells on its tentacles before pulling its meal into the oral cavity. #SMCParks #TidepoolTuesday

Meet our local Sponge Rob! It may not be the most famous tidepool creature, but it certainly is one of the oldest!
Sponges date back over 500 million years and can be yellow, pink, or even blue. This specimen is an Orange Finger Sponge. #TidepoolTuesday

Bat Stars come in a myriad of colors and patterns. When it's time to eat, these scavengers extend their stomach out of their mouth cavity, cover their prey in digestive enzymes, then pull everything back into their body to complete digestion - yum!

This "queen is never late. Everyone else is simply early." ~Tritonia festiva, aka the Diamondback Triton nudibranch.

What is one of the most common tidepool organisms at Yaquina Head? The giant green anemone!
#DYK While usually stationary, anemones can release their grip on a hard surface and move their disc-like "foot" to slowly creep across a rock.

These sea stars may look different, but they're all the same species! ⭐🌊
A sea star's diet can drastically affect its color. At Cobble Beach, stars tend to be reddish-brown. They turn orange after eating mussels with the same kind of pigments as carrots. #TidepoolTuesday

Everyone meet Ranger Stacy!
Ranger Stacy is one of our best wrack line detectives. 🕵 The wrack line (aka a line of debris left on the beach by the last high tide) is riddled with clues about what lies beneath the waves. You just need a sharp eye! #TidepoolTuesday

This starfish is eating with its mouth open ⭐
Sea stars eat by extruding their stomachs and forcing them into the shell of their prey. Sometimes, if the tide goes out during a feeding, its stomach will fall right out, as shown here! #TidepoolTuesday

Our rangers recently spotted some treasure on the shores of Cobble Beach—an intact sea lion skull #TidepoolTuesday
The skull belonged to an adult male California sea lion. We know this thanks to the ridge along the top, also known as a sagittal crest, which only males develop.
