The China-Iran rail corridor is now operational.
The first freight train from Bayannaoer, Inner Mongolia, arrived in Tehran in just 15 days, a 50% faster journey than the 40-day sea route.
This 8,000-km rail link via Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan marks a new phase in the China-Iran-Europe corridor, launched on July 21, 2024, at Aprin station. Officials, including Miad Salehi, CEO of Railways of the Islamic Republic of Iran, hailed it as a step toward making Iran a Eurasian trade hub.
The corridor could enable Iran to export oil to China, potentially bypassing US naval oversight, though experts note sea routes remain dominant for oil due to cost.
