The orcs are at the gate. Not a metaphor. Not hyperbole. The images coming from Ceuta, from the Canary Islands, from Lampedusa, from the Greek islands, from the streets of Paris and Malmö and Brussels – these are the images of a civilization that has left its walls unguarded and is watching, in real time, what happens next. The walls came down not because the orcs breached them. That the Shire, once collectivized, is very difficult to restore. That the orcs, once inside the walls, do not leave because you ask them nicely or because a committee issues a resolution. Sobieski rode down the hill because he understood what was at stake. Because if Vienna fell, Poland was next. Because someone had to hold the gate when everyone else was calculating their own position. We are at the gate again. The question is the same as it always was: who is willing to ride?
