With 238 Scheduled Ancient Monuments designated by Historic England, the #IslesOfScilly has the greatest concentration of monuments of anywhere in the UK. One from above Hugh Town/Porthcressa, St Mary's, and one from Samson Hill, Bryher, for #TombTuesday #TombsTuesday

🚨 Yockenthwaite Stone Circle 🚨 A weird little circular stone setting deep within the Yorkshire Dales. Nobody knows what it is, how old it is, or where it is... Oh wait, no, we know where it is. #archaeology #TombTuesday #TombsTuesday

Possibly the memorial for Elizabeth Framwell,2 faded 2B too much to be sure . She died in 1781 & married to John. Certainly buried on this site. Rest in Peace. In May at the Altar site of #StDenysFaxton in #FaxtonLostVillage #PhilOnaBike #TombsTuesday #MonumentsMonday

During the earliest stages of #Pompeii, the main burial site was outside the Herculaneum Gate. The #Tombs attributed to #burials dating back to the Samnite period (5th-4th C BC). The #dead were interred in #graves or stone coffins. #Archaeology #Roman #History #TombsTuesday

For #TombsTuesday the necropolis at The Tombs of the Kings in Paphos🇨🇾🪦 is such a grand scale ranging from Hellenistic to Roman times, now a UNESCO site🤗

Opinions on the Great Urswick Burial Chamber? It's long been dubiously called a 'dolmen' type monument, with a chamber behind - but many think it's natural... 🤔 #cumbria #lakedistrict #TombTuesday #TombsTuesday #archaeology

An aerial shot of the gigantic 'Raiset Pike', a bi-partite long cairn 🧐. One of the largest burial monuments in northern England, it comprises two massive Early Neolithic burial mounds (c. 3600 BC), bridged together. #archaeology #travel #lakedistrict #TombsTuesday #neolithic

There's a curious sense of dereliction about graveyards, even at the most cherished and looked after churches. Slow inevitable decay above and below the ground. Beautiful carved cross on grave in decline and ... incline #TombsTuesday #TombTuesday #StMarysUpavon.

Lots of crumbling tombs again, several listed and surrounded by metal fences. #TheTwitterMouse isn't sure if these are a form of #Mortsafe or if the fencing is just decorative. They are spiky so maybe there is some deterrent #TombsTuesday

Chest tombs litter the churchyard at #Ansty. Slowly sinking and crumbling. These memorials built to remember the dead are now just a reminder that we forgot them. #TombsTuesday

Heraldic devices of the Mompesson family (matching those in the #GhostDoor) who rebuilt the north aisle of #SteepleLangfordChurch. Said to be a panel from a chest tomb discovered during the C19 rennovations. Lovely light from C15 perpendicular window #TombsTuesday
