One of the many important remnants of colonial heritage at Tranquebar, or Tharangambadi, captured through my lens - Ziegenbalg House and Museum. Ziegenbalg was a German Lutheran missionary and the first Pietist to serve in India. Sent under the patronage of Frederick IV of Denmark, he co-founded the Danish-Halle Mission in Tranquebar with Heinrich Plütschau in 1706. He learned to read, write, and speak Tamil fluently within just a couple of years. He also produced the first complete translation of the New Testament into Tamil in 1715 and translated parts of the Old Testament. He introduced the first printing press for Protestant missions in India to publish Tamil scriptures and school books, just like the one seen in the photo below. He also challenged 18th-century caste norms by integrating suppressed outcasts ("pariahs") and establishing early schools for both boys and girls. He compiled Tamil grammars, dictionaries, and studies on Indian culture and religion, bridging European and South Indian thought. He established a seminary to train native clergy and laid the groundwork for the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC). The stitched fishing boat at the #Tranquebar #Tharangambadi museum. While it is nice to refurbished bungalow/hotel, well restored and maintained Churches and the Danish museum, the shops on the shore don't add any value to the place.
