#Leaflitter is an important component of #forest #ecosystems. It accumulates in particularly large quantities in #deciduousforests of temperate latitudes with #treestands that shed their #leaves in #autumn. In this context, I present two scientific papers that deal with the #decompositionrate of leaf litter and the #organisms involved.
Deciduous trees in temperate climates shed their leaves in autumn to prevent water from evaporating from the leaf surface during the colder months. Trees no longer absorb water through their roots in winter, so water loss through the leaves would dehydrate them. The typical autumn colors of the leaves, are yellow, red, orange and result from the tree reabsorbing chlorophyll, while carotenoids remain. Many trees shed their leaves as soon as they detach from the tree's vascular system. In some trees, such as certain oaks, the leaves can remain on the tree for a while longer before falling and becoming part of the leaf litter.
Leaf litter can be divided into different #zones at varying #depths. The uppermost #layer consists of newly fallen leaves, which, at least in autumn, initially appear fresh and vibrant. However, immediately after falling, they are already subject to #decompositionprocesses by a wide variety of organisms.
The further this decomposition process progresses, the deeper the layers of leaf litter become. In these deeper layers, they are no longer individually recognizable as former leaves, but have decomposed into dark humus, thus forming the #nutrientrich substrate that is #vital for the survival of forests.
Decomposing organisms include #bacteria and #fungi, #insects, #mites, #millipedes, and earthworms. Many of these #primaryconsumers are, in turn, food sources for other organisms, which is why #ephemeralhabitats like leaf litter, which are only temporarily available, represent #complexecosystems.
Close associations between different organisms, such as specific #predatorprey relationships, #parasitism, #symbiosis, or #phoresis, are part of this complexity.
In my #video (S. F. Wirth, 2024), I investigated and documented #phoretic interactions in a specific type of leaf litter: fallen leaves that have landed in a hollow, open-topped #treestump and are decomposing there. The predominantly #fungivorous #mite #Histiostoma sp. (#Histiostomatidae, #Astigmata) is involved in this process, dispersed by the #chilopode #Lithobius #forficatus (Myriapoda), a strategy known as phoresis. Presumably, the mite's phoretic dispersal stage also #hyperphoretically carries #fungalspores as a further strategy, leading to the growth of a fungus in the leaf litter, on which the mite feeds. Thus, the mite introduces a primary decomposer into the leaf litter micro ecosystem.
The authors Y. Song et al. (2023) have also studied the #biodiversity in leaf litter and its ecological relationships by investigating the effects of #leaflitterchemistry on #soilorganisms in relation to the shrub #Zanthoxylum #planispinum var. Dintanensis.
The authors have investigated the relationships between chemical components and decomposers in different stages of leaf litter, thus providing a basis for specifically promoting decomposition activities on #microbialcommunities.
The authors M. Jacob et al. (2010) investigated decomposition rates to determine whether tree communities consisting of different species and #monospecificstands exhibit different decomposition rates, which they were able to demonstrate using #mixedstands and beech stands. Mixed stands showed higher decomposition rates in comparative studies. The proportion of individual tree species within the mixed species composition was more important than the diversity of species itself.
