I tweeted about this a couple years ago but Stickel made a lot of contributions to ecology and had some neat ideas. One of which was this early telemetry device by attaching a spool of thread to turtles and then mapping the path #turtlescience

I’m proud of this paper b/c it’s the only paper I’ve ever written where I designed, implemented and collected the field data.💪 And the work is fun to do. Also I hardly ever have first authored pubs anymore! 5/n #turtlescience

We estimated about 1.2 turtles/ha which is pretty low, and based on encounter rate indices is about 1/6th the density in the 40s and 50s. Box turtles are not doing well! 4/n #turtlescience

Mainly this is a paper about methodology but the field work continues that started by Lucille Stickel (former Patuxent Center Director) in the 1940s on Patuxent Refuge. We still catch some of her marked turtles from the 40s and 50s. 3/n #turtlescience

whereas most turtles have 5 vertebral scutes down the middle of their backs this stylish fellow has 8, which I've never seen before. I'm sure it will lead to extra reproductive opportunities. #turtlescience

box turtles are basically on a European vacation schedule, you can't find them from about July 1 till the end of September. After a long dry spell I found this old unmarked guy who evaded us for 4 years! #turtlescience
