What's the right balance between medical innovation, patient care, and industry influence?
Doctors paid by Novo Nordisk prescribed Ozempic 2.7 times more often than unpaid peers, equating to $3.7 billion in extra drug sales.
Experts, including #USCPrice’s Genevieve Kanter (@ProfGenKanter), stressed that fewer physicians now take part in these payment systems, but real progress may come from independent cost-effectiveness evaluations or insurer reforms.

#USCPrice's @ProfGenKanter provides essential perspective on RFK Jr.’s controversial decision to oust the national vaccine advisory board over alleged conflicts of interest.
While the move raises alarms, her research shows a sharp drop in financial conflicts among vaccine advisers — from 43% in 2000 to just 5% in the past decade.
As new members take the helm, Kanter emphasizes the need for transparency on all sides: “We don't want to replace one conflict with another set of conflicts.”

Did someone say "conflicts of interest" and "advisory committees"? As it happens, I have a few thoughts about that. Usually, I mumble these things quietly to myself, but this time, @statnews published my hot take:

In a candid exchange with Senator John Kennedy during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, #USCPrice Professor and @USCSchaeffer Senior Scholar Neeraj Sood laid out three actionable steps to lower drug costs: price transparency, fiduciary responsibility for pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), and passing manufacturer rebates directly to patients.
These proposals cut through the noise and highlighted how current PBM practices can significantly inflate out-of-pocket costs—and may even cross legal lines.
The exchange offers a clear-eyed look at policy solutions.

At a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, #USCPrice Professor and @USCSchaeffer Senior Scholar Neeraj Sood presented striking research showing that nearly 40% of every $100 spent on #prescription drugs goes to intermediaries like pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), insurers, and pharmacies—many of which earn profits well above the S&P 500 average.
His findings challenge the idea that drug manufacturers alone drive high prices and point to serious competition issues within the supply chain. This concentration of power may be driving up costs for patients, especially in critical markets like #insulin.

As #LACounty rebuilds after the devastating January #wildfires, #USCPrice’s Richard Green underscores a crucial point: recovery isn’t just about speed—it’s about listening.
As director of the @LuskCenter for Real Estate, Green stresses that large-scale solutions must be shaped by the people directly impacted. “Their emotions are so raw right now,” he says, warning that imposed plans won’t succeed without genuine community input.

Chris Boone, the new #USCPrice Dean, is known for his passion for sustainability. But that’s hardly his only passion. When he isn’t on USC’s campus, he’s often looking at the stars, snapping photos of celestial objects with his astrophotography camera.
One “reason why I love astrophotography is it gives me perspective,” Boone said. “It makes me realize that we’re all made of stardust and we’ll eventually return to stardust. And sometimes the little daily problems pale in comparison to the scale and the magnitude of not just our galaxy, but galaxies beyond.”
Boone also has a passion and a plan for supporting students. He discussed those topics, as well as his vision for the USC Price School, in a wide-ranging interview.

As 2024 comes to a close, #USCPrice associate professor and vice dean of research Alice Chen joins other healthcare leaders in reflecting on key shifts shaping the pharmaceutical landscape with @HealthcareBrew.
Chen notes how the rise of GLP-1s is transforming obesity treatment, with growing demand and potential public coverage poised to impact chronic disease prevalence and related healthcare costs.
"The Inflation Reduction Act also introduced incentives to reduce pharmaceutical prices, revenues, and copays. It’s unclear what the impact of this policy will be, but its potential impacts on pricing, drug development, and patient access should be studied and monitored," Chen says.

The race for California’s 45th congressional district is neck and neck, with Rep. Michelle Steel and Derek Tran separated by fewer than 100 votes.
#USCPrice Professor and @GovArnoldUSC Academic Director Christian Grose notes that while the momentum appears to favor Tran, the razor-thin margin leaves room for Steel to hold on.
Could this be a turning point for Democrats in #OrangeCounty?

A new analysis by #USCPrice's @CID_USC and the Elections & Voting Information Center revealed that voters in Georgia, California, and Colorado who used a free vote-by-mail ballot tracking tool during the 2022 midterms had higher confidence in the electoral process than non-users.
These voters were also more likely to #vote, thanks to regular vote reminders and notifications. Ballot tracking reduces uncertainty, boosts trust, and ultimately leads to stronger voter turnout.
