Servicing streamgages in #GrandCanyon often require strapping all kinds of oddly shaped equipment to your back and hiking for several miles. #USGS_AzWSC technicians hauled solar panels, batteries, and surveying gear down to Pumphouse Wash and Hermit Creek last month.

The Little Colorado River near the mouth is a critical #USGS_AzWSC monitoring site for uranium level, sediment load, water temperature, and streamflow. The site is visited quarterly via river trip or helicopter. The technicians who call this place their office are a lucky bunch!

πβ€οΈ Happy Birthday, Arizona! 113 years looks good on you! Today we celebrate our stunning state's beauty & spirit, and Valentine's Day!π΅π #AZBirthday #ValentinesDay #USGS_SBSC #USGS_AzWSC #ArizonaStatehood

From programming the gage computer to building the gage house and securing equipment, establishing a new streamgage requires many hands on deck. This #USGS_AzWSC crew worked hard to install a new gage in Redfield Canyon Wilderness in southern Arizona.

#USGS_AzWSC hydro-techs Kat Cooney and Janice Talley were #twinning while collecting a water quality sample at Lees Ferry last month.

Water quality sampling often requires a vehicle equipped for processing the samples using specific bottles, filters, or methods. #USGS_AzWSC technician Kat Cooney processes an alkalinity sample in a field vehicle.

Uranium mines located around #GrandCanyon have the potential to influence water chemistry. #USGS_AzWSC collects samples from various springs and wells to help inform water quality trends in the area.

There is nothing better than golden hour on the #ColoradoRiver. #USGS_AzWSC technicians were lucky to have a serene and quiet field day.

These cold and windy winter months make the thought of summer all the more sweet. During warmer days last year, #USGS_AzWSC hydrologic technician Charles Mogan waded in the Little Colorado River near Greer to collect a discharge measurement.

#USGS_AzWSC technicians smile and wave despite the arduous day spent hauling equipment to a gage at the bottom of Cataract Canyon. The steep and loose "trail" is marked primarily by horse and deer droppings. π©

Flagstaff is far from a winter wonderland right now. However, the lack of snow is helpful when trying navigate to this site; Newman Canyon above Upper Lake Mary. #USGS_AzWSC technicians are hoping to make one more visit to this site before it gets snowed in.

From all of us at the Flagstaff Science Center campus, we wish you a Merry Christmas & joyous holidays, however you celebrate! (our holiday greeting to you is featured at minute 3.34 π) #USGS_SBSC #USGS_AzWSC #GMEGSC @USGS_AstroGeo
From all of us here at Interior, we wish you a happy, healthy and joyous holiday season!
A rock fall occurred in #GrandCanyon opposite #CarbonCreekCanyon off of the east rim, downstream of the #LittleColoradoRiver, and the #NPS river trip caught this geologic event in action β what a sight! #USGS_AzWSC

#USGS_AzWSC technicians descended into Cataract Creek last month to service a flood warning gage below Heather Wash. Cataract Creek eventually leads to Havasu Creek, a tributary to the #ColoradoRiver in #GrandCanyon.

The Lees Ferry streamgage is one of the most important gages in the country because it is used for accounting between the upper and lower Colorado River Basins. #USGS_AzWSC staff visit this gage at least every other month to ensure accuracy.

#USGS_AzWSC hydrologists visited sites along the Salt River to collect flow rates and water quality data for the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). Elevated flows, like those seen here, can influence water chemistry, suspended sediment, and bacteria levels.

At #USGS_AzWSC a truck isn't just a thing used to move stuff from point A to point B. A truck can be a mobile lab, a sleeping shelter, a stock room, and sample storage. This truck served as a sample processing area for a water quality trip on the north rim of #GrandCanyon.

Collecting flow rate data from springs can be challenging because some springs have such low rates. #USGS_AzWSC technician Kat Cooney got creative at Upper Horn Spring and used a large plastic sheet to help measure the volume of water that was produced in a set amount of time.

Collecting water science data in the backcountry means running titrations at camp. #USGS_AzWSC employees Kat Cooney and Max Evans are seen here calibrating a meter before calculating the alkalinity of the water samples.
