Watch this heartbreaking video of a Peruvian woman mourning her brother’s death, shot by police during anti-coup protests in the south of the country. “[President Boluarte] killed my mother too, because two months after his death, my mother died of sorrow, of pain.” Protests have returned to the capital Lima half a year after democratically elected leftist President Pedro Castillo was overthrown by the widely unpopular right-wing Congress, and the unelected President Dina Boluarte seized power. According to the latest CPI poll, 86% of the population oppose Boluarte but she enjoys support from the EU and the US. At the same time, she accused protesters of being “out of touch with the average Peruvian” last week. People from all over the country made the trip to the capital to demand accountability after at least 60 people were killed by police forces, mainly in the mostly indigenous south, during the height of the anti-coup protests earlier this year. #TomaDeLima
