Bernie in 2016 got a lot of support from self identified moderate or conservative white voters in the Dem primary. In 2020 he won over socially moderate working class latino voters. He enjoys support among self identified moderates and independents in polls. It’s a skill and it’s not accidental. The point isn’t that the average voter knows these things. It’s that Bernie is able to cut through message obstacles that hamper other Dems and his message reaches these more moderate voters, specifically because he’s been doing it for years. I want someone who shows that they can get voters who don’t already vote Dem. In NY this past election, it was the opposite trend: the state shifting red, not that AOC won over voters who’ve traditionally voted conservative. It was that Trump won over some AOC voters! That’s the wrong direction.

Exactly this. The tactic here is to delegitimise democratically elected political opponents using meaningless labels. Some on the left seem more interested in confecting outrage than addressing actual violence & terrorism. This is why ‘extremism’ is such a subjective term.
