Once, when Vijay called me up, I invited him to our office. The next call I got was from one of his strategists who asked me if I wanted a police lathi-charge at my workplace.
Arun Ram nailed it then: Vijay’s team themselves knew their crowds weren’t “fans” but an uncontrollable mob. And yet, Vijay enabled it, by surging the crowd for hours, playing to the gallery, and treating mob frenzy as political capital.
This might be acceptable, even a matter of pride, for a film star, but if Vijay wants to make his transition to a politician worthwhile, he should step down from van tops and high podiums and show courage and conviction to mingle with the masses.
He commands a following like no other actor. But instead of showing courage, conviction, or even basic humanity to stand with his fans after a surmountable tragedy, he ran away.
The piece warned of everything we saw in Karur:
1.Stage Immaturity & Playing to the Gallery: stoking frenzy, not leadership.
2.Mockery of Political Decorum: reducing politics to slapstick.
3.False Comparisons with MGR: without ideology, discipline, or depth.
4.Dependence on Bouncers, Not Cadres: spectacle over responsibility.
5.Unruly Fan Base, Not Disciplined Political Base: mobs, not a movements.
6.High Podiums, Van-Tops, Distance from People: theatrics instead of empathy.
7.Failure to Transition from Cinema to Politics: Glamour with zero responsibility, zero accountability.
