Vanessa Springora, the policy of (child) consent and Macron’s government
As soon as Consent, the tale of paedophilia penned by #VanessaSpringora, came out in early 2020, three of Macron's cabinet ministers came out insupport of it.
Why ?
Ostensibly, to fight paedophilia, a crime become rampant in France. Except that French laws (and judges) are so lax the country is now known as #Pedoland. Criminals rarely get worse than a reprieve; a strict statute of limitations further silences victims.
Truth is, the cabinet of @EmmanuelMacron was, and is, intent on making consent a household word – familiar, almost beneficial. Consent means that children may choose to have sex with an adult: no matter how young, or small, it’s their call.
Early in his first term, the most unpopular president in French history asked Justice minister Nicole Belloubet for a bill setting such an « age of consent ». She came up with a 13-15 range.
Then followed, four years ago, through @EditionsGrasset, an imprint of publishing giant Hachette, the book Consent. In this memoir, a book editor named Vanessa Springora describes her affair, aged 14, with writer Gabriel Matzneff, 50.
The contents were nothing new, Matzneff having already described the affair in two books of his own ; what made me cringe was the title.
Having myself written, 15 years earlier, a much harder-hitting memoir targetting Matzneff, I would never have used that word. I’d considered Portrait of a pervert before settling for The Crocodile .
But consent ? No way.
My own book never saw the light of day: Springora's publisher, Grasset, led me round in circles until I had to give up. The @nytimes has documented my ordeal in a full-page investigative piece:

Imagine my surprise when, 15 years later, the very same Grasset turned around and published, to deafening media din, the story of 14-year-old Springora’s “consent”.
The three ministers – Marlène Schiappa (male-female equality), Aurélien Taquet (Child Protection) and Franck Riester (Culture) ran to support this predictable best-seller.
Consent has been French paedophiles’s constant demand since the 1970s. In May 1977, one such petition was printed in Le Monde newspaper ; it was signed, among others, by Dr Pierre Simon, France’s version of Alfred #Kinsey. Except that this home-gown Kinsey, founder of Family Planning and a free mason grand-master, was also a private advisor to Health Minister Simone Veil.
By now, it’s an old story : getting the populace to embrace the idea of consent. What better way than a media campaign, a double bill from Hachette (which has a near-monopoly on school books and books intended for children) paired with a president famous for his own affair, at age 14, with a 39-year-old teacher?
The recipe is obvious : take a richly-paid industry insider (V Springora), add a subsidized-author-turned-monster, then provide the solution : from now on, it’s the kid's own call to consent… or not.
My own book, needless to say, I had to self-publish.
