Mineralogically, obsidian is not a true mineral but an amorphous natural glass primarily composed of silica (SiO₂, typically 70-75%) with lesser amounts of alumina (Al₂O₃), sodium, potassium, and trace iron or titanium oxides that can impart black, brown, red, or green hues.
Its lack of crystalline structure gives it a vitreous luster, Mohs hardness around 5-6, and density of about 2.4 g/cm³, sometimes with perlitic textures from hydration cracks or spherulites from partial devitrification.
▶️ These formations arise during felsic volcanic eruptions when high-silica magma, enriched in volatiles like water vapor, reaches the surface and extrudes as a slow-moving, highly viscous lava dome or flow.
▪️ Rapid quenching upon exposure to air or water prevents crystal growth, solidifying the melt into glass.
▪️ Initial explosive phases may deposit ash and pumice, followed by effusive flow of the degassed lava that spreads and cools over days to weeks, forming breccias at the base and front from fragmented glassy crusts, with internal shearing creating banding and folds.
↘️ Over time, hydration and weathering can alter the surface, but the core remains pristine glass, as seen in young examples like the 1,300-year-old Big Obsidian Flow in Oregon's Newberry Caldera.
