Like Revolving Disks and #Volvelles which I spoke on recently, Moving Books are considered a forerunner of motion combined with story-telling, along with other optical toys, contributed significantly to pre cinema. #Meggendorfer #Revolvingdisks #popupbooks

FATHER OF THE POP-UP BOOK
LOTHAR MEGGENDORFER (1847-1925)
The father of the pop-up book is generally thought of as Meggendorfer. He is credited with producing the Pop-Up book as we know it today, despite the fact that several forms of movable books existed before him. Perhaps Meggendorfer did it better.

Yesterday we commemorated Petrus Apianus. As we like the books of this influential German humanist, mathematician and astronomer a lot, we'd like to highlight another of his classics today: Cosmographia, edited and expanded by Gemma Frisius.

Fun to spend the day with a book packed full of spinning #volvelles! Sebastian Münster's Organum Uranicum, 1536.

Nothing makes me happier than finding an edition adding #volvelles where the original only included engravings #histsci (from the English 1561 translation of Martin Cortés’ Breve tratado de la esfera y el arte de navegar).

Our #ScienceWeek2022 work on #ApiansWheels is done, and we've made about 150 replicas this week! The owner of this book didn't quite follow the instructions correctly. The small creature should have been stuck to the back of the page instead of the scrap paper here! #Volvelles

It’s #scienceweek and what better way to celebrate than by spinning volvelles in our copy of Sturmy’s Mariner’s Magazine!
#Volvelles are concentric paper or parchment circles used in Medieval Europe to calculate the phases of the sun and moon throughout the year.

@julietsperling There are many but : https://t.co/04sbB5ceu9 @GallicaBnF @laBnF (there is a facsimile by @TASCHEN) I was lucky enough to see it with my own eyes and reproductions can't do this gem any justice (and #volvelles 🤩)

Volvelles!! Yay! 🤩
My research on Peter Apian’s ‘Cosmographia’ and the paper moveable instruments included in this book ( #volvelles ) is on display at @TheJohnRylands in the Rylands Gallery. 💫✨

The ‘Volvelle’ is probably most familiar to us as a scientific instrument and, specifically, as a device used in astronomical calculations however its use in entertainment i.e., ‘Moving Books’, ‘Revolving Disks’ & #Volvelles grew dramatically post 1524.
The first examples of movable books were from the 11th and 12th centuries. While the inventor of the first movable book is unknown, Ramon Llull of Majorca, a poet, employed revolving discs and volvelles in his writings to demonstrate his intricate beliefs.
