Continuing from the previous below #forecast, the key hurdles highlighted earlier continue to persist, limiting further #monsoon advancement. 🌧️
Frequent Western Disturbances (#WDs) have remained active over North India, contributing to repeated dry-air intrusions into the northeastern Arabian Sea from it's outer band trough on lower mid level.. At the same time, the establishment of the Tropical Easterly Jet (#TEJ) over the 20°N latitude belt has remained slower than usual due to same WD's dipping trough activity.
Another important factor has been the relatively weak Low-Level Jet (#SomaliJet) over the Arabian Sea. The subdued strength of these cross-equatorial #westerlies has restricted moisture transport and reduced the momentum required for rapid northward advancement of the monsoon current.
Adding to this, the lack of significant support from the Madden–Julian Oscillation (#MJO) has resulted in a relatively suppressed large-scale convective environment across the region.
There are also indications that the evolving #ElNino conditions over the Pacific Ocean may be influencing the broader atmospheric circulation pattern. While it is too early to attribute the current slowdown solely to El Niño, its developing background influence could be contributing to a less favourable environment for robust monsoon progression.
As a consequence, monsoon progress has been minimal over the past 10 days, with the southwest monsoon largely remaining stalled near the #Goa latitude (~15°N) after its initial advance.
👉 Thus, a combination of frequent dry-air intrusions, delayed TEJ establishment due to frequent WD activity , a weak Somali Jet, suppressed MJO support, and the possible emerging influence of El Niño has prevented the monsoon from gaining the strength required for sustained northward progression.

Many are asking why South #Konkan is witnessing widespread pre-monsoon #Thunderstorm activity while North #Konkan, including #Mumbai, continues to miss out on significant rainfall ? ⛈️
As explained in my earlier forecasts, the answer lies in the prevailing large-scale #atmospheric setup.
Currently, regions north of roughly 18°N latitude remain under the influence of relatively dry continental air. Frequent southward-dipping #WD troughs are helping transport dry northwesterly winds into the lower and mid-levels of the atmosphere, while an anticyclonic circulation over the western Arabian Sea continues to support dry northerly flow at higher levels.
At the same time, the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon remains relatively weak, with an insufficiently developed low-level Somalia Jet. As a result, the moisture-laden westerlies are struggling to advance northward and displace the dry air mass currently dominating North Konkan.
The broader background state of the atmosphere is also not particularly favourable. With no support from the #MJO and the Bay of Bengal remaining largely dormant, large-scale convective activity remains suppressed across the region.
Geography further complicates the situation. The northwestern section of India's west coast lies closer to the dry north Arabian Sea and adjoining desert regions of the Middle East, making it more susceptible to dry-air intrusions whenever the #monsoon flow weakens.
In many such situations, a well-developed Bay of Bengal system moving westward often helps break the stalemate by transporting abundant moisture not only from the Bay but also indirectly from the western Pacific region. However, no such strong moisture-supporting system is currently present.
As a result, #Mumbai finds itself trapped in an unfavourable pre-monsoon weather pattern. The city has witnessed a hat-trick of minimum temperatures around 30°C at #Colaba over the past three days, reflecting the persistent humid and oppressive conditions. 🥵
👉 In essence, Mumbai is currently caught in a "pre-monsoon weather trap" — too humid and cloudy for comfortable weather, yet lacking the atmospheric support required for widespread, sustained rainfall.
For now, model guidance continues to delay a decisive breakthrough. Until the large-scale circulation pattern changes and stronger monsoon currents establish themselves, it remains a wait-and-watch situation.
As always, the atmosphere will ultimately decide the timing of the transition. 🌧️
