A material almost nobody outside the chip industry had ever heard of just became one of the most important stories in technology.
What it does. Tungsten hexafluoride — #WF6 — is the only gas factories use to "grow" tiny tungsten metal wires inside every advanced chip. Those wires connect billions of transistors together. Without them, the chip is just sand.
What happened. Two Japanese makers — Kanto Denka Kogyo and Central Glass — told Samsung, SK Hynix and TSMC they will permanently stop making WF6 from 1 July 2026. Between them, they are roughly a quarter of the world's supply. The last shipments went out on 30 June.
Why they quit. WF6 is made from ultra-pure tungsten powder, and that powder is 60–70% of its cost. China controls about 80% of the world's tungsten and, since early 2025, has been choking off exports. Japan ran its lines on stockpiles for months. The stockpiles ran out.
The price reaction. WF6 prices are up roughly 232.7% year-on-year. The raw material behind it — an intermediate called APT — is up about 557% since China's controls began. This is a supply shock, not a demand boom.
Who it hurts. Memory and logic makers (Samsung, SK Hynix, TSMC, Micron, Kioxia) — and, eventually, the price of DRAM, NAND flash and the HBM memory that AI servers run on.
Who it can help. The handful of firms that still make the gas — or the tungsten powder behind it — mostly in China and South Korea, plus the few non-China miners the West is now scrambling to fund.

It's that the scarcity hits semi fabs via a very specific bottleneck: #WF6 (#tungsten hexafluoride) gas. Three Japanese suppliers - Kanto Denka, Central Glass, SK Specialty produce most of the world's WF6. To add insult to injury, they all source tungsten powder from China. When China went to zero APT exports, these suppliers started drawing down inventory. The June deadline isn't Samsung getting told, it's when the buffer math stops working.
|The substitution q is good. Molybdenum is replacing tungsten in 3D NAND word lines at 200+ layers. Kioxia's already doing it in BICS Flash. Lam has the ALTUS Halo tool for it. But qual takes 18+ months, and you can't skip steps on a deposition material that sits in every layer of the stack. So moly is the answer to the 2028 question, not the 2026 q.
