The last standing #Waterford Napoleonic Signal Tower along the breathtaking #Ardmore Cliff Walk. Built between 1805 and 1806, it was one of six towers built along Waterford's coast to guard against French invasion. Chatting to Gemma #WLRFM today 1.30pm about some of our local Ringforts. There are over 450 recorded #Ringforts in #Waterford (National Monuments -Service Sites & Monuments Record) Drone photos from our visit to Ringforts in Kilbrien (1/2) & Middlequarter (3/4) Co. Waterford by John Foley.
Image 2. shows the fosse or ditch and bank around the Scartmountain Ringfort still clearly defined today. Accessing the largest of the three forts (1) was not an easy task. Most Waterford Ringfort are visible as faint features in the landscape. One of the most spectacular county ringforts.

On the 29th December 1943, they rescued 165 German sailors from the aftermath of a brutal naval battle. Despite Ireland’s neutrality, Donohue defied orders to save lives, bringing the survivors to Cork. A powerful act of humanity in the chaos of war. 🚢 #IrishHistory #WWII

"In Ballynatray is a place name Groivín-an-Airgid or the money grove. The Schools collection records many stories of this place name related to its ancient buried treasure. It’s said in 1871, a party of men set out to search for gold in the Deer-Park. It is supposed to have been buried there by an Abbott of Ballynatray named Molanfhed. They dug several pit-holes but could find no gold. The men were then told by an old resident that if they searched at twelve o’clock at night, they would find the gold. Retuning at midnight but were hunted out of the park by a swarm of bees. To the present day, no other attempt has been made to find the Abbots gold. The grove where the money is supposed to be hidden still bears the name of Groivín-an-Airgid or the ‘money grove’ and the Abbott was Molanfhed" Duchas, Schools Folklore Collection, 1937
