My friend @Samwyri will tell you that back in 2011, Petrol hit sh2,500.. at that time, the price of a beer and I think the exchange rate for a dollar .
Drink beer and walk was the mantra
"Diesel is now more expensive than petrol... what a time to be Ugandan."
When you look at today's fuel prices, think about your boda guy.
In Uganda, this is how we tell whether you are a serious person or not. Every serious Ugandan has a designated boda guy. The one who knows your home, your office, your preferred route, and somehow always appears when you need him.
Mine is called Umar.
As we rode today, I asked him whether boda riders complain about fuel prices as much as the rest of us do. He laughed and pointed at his SPIRO electric bike. Of all the reasons he switched to electric, saving on fuel was not even the main one.
His real reason was trauma.
Before this bike, Umar owned a normal Bajaj motorcycle. One day it was stolen. He tried everything he could to recover it, but the trail went cold and the bike was never seen again.
That experience changed the way he looks at motorcycles. When it came time to get another bike, he made one decision: if he was ever going to own a motorcycle again, it had to be one whose location could always be known.
That is what attracted him to the electric ecosystem.
Through the technology built around these bikes, riders can access tracking information and know where their assets are. The fuel savings are nice, but for Umar, peace of mind was the bigger selling point.
This actually got me thinking about the #BodaKuDigital campaign that Uganda Communications Commission is currently rolling out.
Most people hear "digital transformation" and immediately think about apps, smartphones, or internet access. Yet for many boda riders, digitalisation is much more practical than that. It is about security. It is about traceability. It is about proving income, accessing financial services, protecting assets, and building a business that can survive beyond today's cash collection.
What is one problem in your industry that tech solved? #BeeraKuDigital

That is the thing about Ugandans. The majority of this society is never ready to hold leaders accountable. In fact, we are quick to turn on the few who actually try. Churches criticised the #March2Parliament protests. The same churches criticised the 2011 #Walk2Work protests. Social media is always full of people angry at the ones doing something, never at the ones causing the problem. We are a society almost completely devoid of values.
In rhetoric, we sound otherwise. Listen to our cultural leaders, our religious leaders, our elders speak at any function and you would think we are a deeply principled people. Practically, only a handful actually live by what they say in public. Most will let their greed, their comfort, and their ambition come before any of the values they preach in public.
It is exactly why thieving ministers still command respect in our society . We give them the front row at our weddings. We invite them to officiate at our church fundraisers. We line them up to give keynote speeches at university graduations. We follow them on social media and clap for their birthdays. We allow them to launder their reputations through proximity to us, and then we wonder why nothing changes.
We are the reason for our suffering.
Ugandans will still invite MPs to weddings, funerals, church services, fundraising etc There has to be a social cost for these draconian decisions, there must be a social rejection and a price for these decisions.

Since 2011, Uganda has registered a repeated trend of severe food insecurity following every general election. Those who recall the 2021 elections remember the famous #Walk2Work protests, a civic action triggered by food prices rising above 30 percent inflation. People could hardly afford food in the marketplace- Ms. @kiraboaggie

Happening Now: Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) including @FRAUGANDA, @SEATINIUGANDA, @CSBAGUGANDA, @CefrohtUg, and @pelum_uganda are holding a press conference themed โWe Need to Watch Out! CSOs Warn of a Looming Food Crisis as Uganda Enters Another Election Cycle.โ
Findings from the 2025 IPC Analysis reveal that 16% of Ugandans are currently food insecure. Hunger has become a recurring trend after every election since 2011, a worrying sign that Uganda could face yet another post-election food crisis.
They are calling for urgent @GovUganda action to protect households and stabilize food production.

"If we are to assess the success of 23rd #march2parliement, we can say apart from #Walk2work of @kizzabesigye1 which had leaders, the recent protest was a success because it was leaderless and indeed you saw the deployment vindicates its success" @BuwemboHabib #march2parliement

Hello Ugandans, we missed the chance to topple the M7 regime with @kizzabesigye1's #walk2work, but we can defeat corruption with #March2Parliament. #AnitaMustResign #CorruptionIsWinnable #AmongMustGo
