Turning a Linux #Surface tablet into a semi-Android tablet. Choose to login to Linux desktop or Android on the boot.
I turned my Surface Go 2 into a hybrid Linux/Android tablet. Configuring #Waydroid only session with Sway on Linux. At login, I can choose either a normal Linux desktop or a dedicated Android session, without dual-booting or installing Android-x86. I did this on Arch Linux, it may also applicable to #postmarketOS and Mobian.
Why dis I do this? Because Linux desktop sucks for touch screen. You cannot use it without keyboards. Even though we have Phosh it is not mature.
However x86 is great for its compatibility. Sometimes I can play light Steam games on Linux side while you cannot do that on Android (Winlator is buggy)
Strictly speaking, this is not BlissOS or ChromeOS. Android runs inside a Waydroid container on Arch Linux, while a minimal Sway session gives it the entire screen. The Linux host runs almost nothing besides the services Waydroid needs and an SSH daemon, leaving most of the tablet’s limited resources to Android.
There are still limitations. Android cannot directly shut down the Linux host, read the real battery level, control brightness, or rotate the screen automatically. My workaround is to use Termux inside Android to SSH back into the Linux host over a stable mDNS address. From there, scripts can call swaymsg, upower, and other Linux tools to control brightness, volume, power, and battery information.
Suspend technically works, but Linux suspend is very different from Android’s always-connected sleep mode: notifications stop and SSH disconnects. I therefore prefer simply turning off the screen.
With the display off, upower sometimes estimates nearly 24 hours of battery life. Turn the screen back on, however, and it quickly drops to about five hours.
It is not a perfect Android tablet, but it is a surprisingly usable Linux–Android hybrid.
