I started my talk with a simple scenario. A patient goes for routine screening. BMI is still in the obesity range. Within minutes, the patient is assumed to be eating too much junk food and “not trying hard enough”.
.
What the clinician didn’t know? The patient had already lost ~30% of baseline body weight after bariatric surgery, sustained with regular, healthy lifestyle changes.
.
That assumption was made purely on BMI without knowing the background clinical context. This is how weight stigma often appears in healthcare.
.
When we reduce a person to a number, we miss the story. We miss past success, current behaviours, barriers, and strengths. And more importantly, we risk damaging trust and long-term engagement with our patients.

Obesity care should start with curiosity, not judgement. With listening and recognizing progress, not labelling.

If we want better outcomes, we first need safer clinical spaces through reducing weight stigma!
