Next we talked about our motivations….what drives us with #WhyBlackinCancer #WhyBIC. We all have personal stories of those affected by cancer. Our experiences in witnessing our loved ones go through hard times propelled us on those rough days in the office, lab or clinic.

PGY2 year: Got paged to comfort weeping patient
Me: Crying about GBM diagnosis? We can talk.
Patient: No, not GBM. I'm crying because I doubted God.

1) Growing up, I didn’t know a Black PhD in STEM.
2) I’m passionate about equality in cancer prevention/care. The health disparities are VISIBLE.

When I was 11 years old I lost my grandpa to Renal Cell Kidney Cancer. I was distraught because I didn't understand what cancer actually was and I was angry because cancer took my pop pop away from me.
