Like a few other Black in weeks, we wanted to highlight our incredible scientists, see #bicrollcall...
But also explain why we do cancer research, why some of us are cancer advocates etc #whybic (ps. do not look at that # in an emotional state, you WILL cry!) ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Next we talked about our motivationsโฆ.what drives us with #WhyBlackinCancer #WhyBIC. We all have personal stories of those affected by cancer. Our experiences in witnessing our loved ones go through hard times propelled us on those rough days in the office, lab or clinic.
@Maimah Thank you so much for sharing this powerful story. Your story. #WhyBIC was yesterday, but Maimah's story and the stories of many other women are part of my WHY. #BlackinCancerWeek #BlackinCancer

#WhyBIC In caring for cancer patients, I have learned spiritual life lessons.
PGY2 year: Got paged to comfort weeping patient
Me: Crying about GBM diagnosis? We can talk.
Patient: No, not GBM. I'm crying because I doubted God.
Me: I have doubted for much less
Then we prayed
"Most of us got into this field for loved ones we couldn't save, hoping our work somehow saves someone else." Thank you for putting my why into words @GiveHerThePhD24. For my aunt who died of #breastcancer in her 30s. #WhyBlackInCancer #WhyBIC @BlackinCancer
Unfortunately, I know a handful of survivors. I wish that was an exaggeration, but itโs not. Thatโs what inspires me to keep pushing through in this field. Most of us got into this field for loved ones we couldnโt save, hoping our work somehow saves someone else #WhyBlackInCancer
My studies opened my mind to translational research. I am blessed to be in a position to keep my promise to my grandfather. This is my why! #BlackinCancer #Healthequity #WhyBIC #prostatecancerawareness

#WhyBIC Started off curious, but transitioned into personal:
1) Growing up, I didnโt know a Black PhD in STEM.
2) Iโm passionate about equality in cancer prevention/care. The health disparities are VISIBLE.
3) My family has many cancer survivors. ๐ค #motivation #BlackInCancerWeek
I never took it seriously until it affected someone I love. My mother battled silently with her diagnosis and BEAT cancer! She has been CANCER FREE for 9 years!! I conduct my research to assist in the fight against cancer!! โ๐พ #WhyBIC #BlackinCancerWeek @BlackinCancer
My 3 reasons for #WhyBIC .1) Humane 2) Mentor 3) Curiosity. I began my journey in science as a premed student. Thus, I got to shadow and work with surgeons and primary care doctors. During these times, I have listened to and connected with several cancer patients, and their
I was motivated to cancer research by the death of my hero, my father, my junior year in college. His death invigorated me to be part of the scientific generation that ends cancer. Today, my work identifies therapies to cure squamous cell carcinoma. #WhyBlackinCancer #WhyBIC
Now, curiosity and passion drive my interest to study in this field to hopefully help others who are diagnosed with cancer.
And I know if my grandpa was still here he would be proud.

As I got older, I developed a love for science and the interest to answer the questions I had as a kid about cancer and how it killed my pop pop.

When I was 11 years old I lost my grandpa to Renal Cell Kidney Cancer. I was distraught because I didn't understand what cancer actually was and I was angry because cancer took my pop pop away from me.
