So bored of the @TfL #overground soon to be #WindrushLine being dangerously overcrowded. General public shouting at each other and nearly coming to blows this morning because you can’t actually get off at your stop due to the amount of people.
Unsafe travel isn’t good enough
That didn’t take long! Rotherhithe Overground station on the #Windrushline already has posters up following the line’s branding announcement. And (tenuous link alert) from the platform one can see trains passing right through the Thames Tunnel - built by another set of immigrants to Britain who left a legacy of a different kind: the Brunels. FWIW, whilst I’m not super excited by the names, they do have the spirit of community rail lines in rural areas, and the more l think of it, the more I think @TfL played a *blinder* with the launch.
The forced outrage, wokeism rants and spurious debates by adults over line names last week on every media & social channel turned what was a few million quids’ investment in wayfinding - by choosing names that I strongly suspect were predicted to get rentamobs in a fluster - into a HUGE awareness piece worth (i estimate) millions that’d never had the coverage if was portmanteaus like Watson and Goblin (Watford-Euston; Gospel Oak-Barking) etc.
The brilliance of choosing these names (aside from ensuring a unique style for the overground, creating reasons to learn about the area, and it being an actual useful thing) was the PR campaign itself : the more wound up the vocal critics got, the more TfL benefited from their manufactured outrage. And that’s chuffing clever.
