Investing in memory stocks today means that the easy-money phase is over. We’re now in the highly volatile phase where every conviction gets tested over and over again, and it is far harder to trade. In moments like this, it helps to keep things as simple as possible.
The simplest thesis in the memory cycle is therefore not the chipmaker itself. It is the equipment makers and suppliers who profit from the enormous capital budgets of the majors, regardless of what prices are being agreed upon in the short or long term. Picks and shovels instead of gold diggers. The problem is that these stocks are already very expensive, with a few exceptions.
Worldex (KOSDAQ: 101160) is such a candidate, but valued at a P/E of just roughly ten (EV/EBITDA ~3,8x), against 21 for its closest competitor Hana Materials, and at under half of Hana’s market value, even though Worldex earns more revenue and more net income. On normalized earnings the multiple gap widens toward 3x.
Cheap, then. But for good reason.
The business itself is unspectacular, and that is meant as a compliment. Worldex manufactures the silicon consumable parts that sit inside the etching machines of chip production. These parts wear down and must be continuously replaced. More chips produced means more parts. Recurring, predictable, boring in the best sense.
And production stands before a wave. SK Hynix intends to double its memory capacity within five years, driven by AI and HBM. Every new machine calls for Worldex parts over years to come. The demand is already building.
The “good reason” for the discount never lay in the business. It lay with the owner. Founder Bae, 75 years old, controls roughly 35 percent. His sons hold none. He must pass the company on, and the lower the share price at the moment of transfer, the smaller the inheritance tax of up to 60 percent. For years, then, he had a tangible motive to keep the price down. Add to that a token dividend of around two percent, a pile of cash sitting idle, and a CEO who paid himself more than all shareholders combined received in dividends. Trapped value. The market punished it, and rightly so.
Yet that reason has almost entirely dissolved this week. The activist VIP, the second-largest shareholder at 15.64 percent, defeated the family in two votes, most recently with 94.7 percent against management. On July 13, the family capitulated: a 20 billion won buyback and a payout ratio of roughly 40 percent from 2027 onward. Almost word for word what the activist had demanded.
Here lies the crux. The discount was almost 100 percent a governance problem. That very problem is now dissolving, and the trapped cash is finally flowing to shareholders. And yet the stock still trades at its old level. The market is asleep.
Two forces are therefore at work simultaneously. A governance discount that is unwinding, and a multi-year demand wave from the memory build-out. The stock trades near its worst case, while the catalyst everyone had been waiting for has already arrived. The “dirt” in “dirt cheap” got washed away overnight, but it’s still just as cheap.
