Maybe if we encounter a grading situation where we feel we can’t remove bias, maybe we could ask another teacher in the same content area that doesn’t know the student to provide their opinion on the grade? Is this allowed?

@ShelbyLNCSU @WriteTeachChat I love short-term W2L assignments, too! We've talked about this some in previous twitter chats, but I feel like these types of activities are also great for students who are new to writing because they are shorter and relatively low-stakes, which is less scary!

@ms_gnash @WriteTeachChat Hey Treasure! I like the idea of short-term W2L assignments. Things like letters to a teacher/peer, free writes, bell ringers, etc. That way you can periodically collect data from their writing. #WriteTeachChat

@WriteTeachChat No, behavior and attendance should not count as a grade. Often that already impacts the academic grade. I have students who don’t always have a way to get to school, and students who are still learning to control their reactions to social situations. (6th grade) #writeteachchat

If the assignment is changed due to attendance or behavior we work as a team to come up with what will be best for their student and the circumstances they are in! #WriteTeachChat

I think the chapter refers to the "permanent record" as the grade that will end up on the student's report card at the end of a term (A-F, 0-100). However, I do think there are ways we as teachers can make our own conversions b/t these grades!

@WriteTeachChat A2. Writing-to-learn assignments are helpful because they give the student credit for completion without the pressure of a "good" or "bad" grade. Thanks to these W2L assignments, "we avoid passing judgement too soon... we TEACH!" (Pope & Beal, 69).

Rather than penalize them, we should offer other opportunities to grow & make up their work! Do you think offering other assignments would be fair or could that cause issues? #WriteTeachChat
