Most recently, @NrinderWard3 removed me as a friend on FB in retailiation for criticizing her inaction(s) and for organizing tenants in my building.
Shame on you, Nrinder. Meet with me. It is a part of your duty of care to listen to tenants over which you preside. #YHMCC @cityofhamilton

It's Time For Some Reflection
Every year in Hamilton, hundreds of people gather for Take Back The Night, a rally and march organized by our Sexual Assault Centre of Hamilton and Area (@SACHAhamont) to protest sexual violence and affirm survivors' rights to safety. But few know that the origins of this powerful event are tied directly to the life of Angelique Kennedy—a Mi’kmaq woman, survivor, mother, and sex worker whose story catalyzed feminist outrage and grassroots mobilization in the city. As we mark the 40th anniversary of Take Back The Night, in 2025, it is time we remember the woman whose trauma and resilience helped spark the movement. It is time for Hamilton to do some reflection.
Angelique Kennedy was just 13 years old when she was raped by a client at Toronto’s Warwick Hotel. Instead of being treated as a victim, she was arrested and detained under archaic laws that criminalized "sexual immorality." This pattern would repeat throughout her life: being victimized, criminalized, and discarded by a justice system that had no room for women like her—Indigenous, poor, and working in the sex trade.
In 1985, Angelique was again brutally raped—three times—by a man named Robert McNab Wright. During the trial, Judge John Bowlby openly disparaged her in court, stating that she was of “a particular class of women” and that her work as a dancer “promoted lust.” The judge not only blamed Angelique for her own assault but denied her the basic dignity of anonymity, refusing to issue a publication ban that would have protected her identity and the unjust scrutiny of the public.
The public backlash was swift. Feminist groups, civil liberties organizations, faith leaders, and community advocates condemned the judge’s remarks and rallied around Angelique’s case. Out of that outrage, Hamilton’s Take Back The Night movement took form, channeling collective fury into a demand for change. Yet somehow, in the retelling of this city’s feminist history, Angelique's name was quietly erased or - if we believe it - forgotten.
To erase Angelique from this origin story is to erase the uncomfortable truth: that the women most impacted by sexual violence are often the ones least likely to be believed, protected, or remembered. Angelique wasn’t the “perfect victim.” She had worked in the sex trade. She was Indigenous. She had mental health struggles. More importantly, she was also a survivor, a mother, a business owner, and a relentless fighter against a system that tried to crush her spirit at every turn.
Angelique’s story is not just a footnote in Hamilton’s feminist history—it is a mirror. It reflects the way our institutions, from the courts to child welfare agencies, continue to criminalize, surveil, and separate marginalized women from their children and communities. It shows us how social movements often benefit from the pain of the most excluded, while rarely centering or crediting them.
As we gather this year to march in the streets and chant for a world without violence, let us say Angelique’s name. Let us acknowledge that Take Back The Night in Hamilton would not exist without the public cruelty she endured. And let us remember that the movement must continue to evolve—not only to fight for justice, but to repair the harms inflicted by the very systems we claim to resist.
Angelique Kennedy is still alive. She lives with permanent injuries, PTSD, and the economic fallout of a life shaped by systemic violence. And yet, she persists. “They want people like me to disappear,” she said to me when I interviewed her. “But I’m still here.”
We owe her more than silence.
Jelena is a resident of Ward 3, the recipient of the 2024 YWCA Women of Distinction & Jose Julio Sarria Civil Rights Awards, and the executive director of the Sex Workers' Action Program (SWAP). She is a PSW in nursing school with geriatrics and palliative care certifications.

So Andrew Selamn gave a rousing speech today about the city not cleaning up garbage and encapments at GIC. But I feel like he hasn't acknowledged the many community volunteers who clean Alley's and rail trails. Rent a dumpster, grab a shapes container and clean it up.
