As the 2023 Norwegian mackerel fishery draws to a close its interesting to take stock. Out of the c. 246,000t unilateral mackerel quota, over 200,000t have been caught with 132,181t (65%) caught in UK waters. That's c. €211m of mackerel caught in UK waters. #zonalattachment?

Under #ZonalAttachment, @ICES_ASC scientists work out what percentage of shared stocks are ‘attached’ to each country’s EEZ. It is thought that #CoastalStates could then each be allocated quotas, at least partly, in line with their unique percentage.
Mackerel, herring & blue whiting are shared stocks - they swim freely across maritime boundaries - making them challenging to manage. #CoastalStates are exploring a management system whereby each species’ TAC is allocated, at least partly, between states based on #ZonalAttachment
